Marvel Movies in Order: Printable Lists Before Spider-Man Brand New Day

What’s the best way to watch all the Marvel movies in order in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? This is your guide to all the Marvel movies in the MCU and the best order to watch them. Also included are printable Marvel movies in release order lists and Marvel movies in chronological order lists.

The best order to watch Marvel movies before Avengers: Endgame!

Best Way to Watch the Marvel Movies in Order

What is the best order to watch all the Marvel movies before Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Some say chronological order and some say release order. Here you’ll find lists of Marvel movies in order of release date and a list of Marvel movies in chronological order and printable PDFs for both.

There are so many ways you can watch the Marvel movies, but these lists are based on your interests.

How many Marvel movies are there in the MCU? Right now, there are 37 Marvel movies released.

Phase 3 ended in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home and Phase 4 ended with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Well technically Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Phase 5 of the MCU began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

What order should YOU watch the Marvel movies? I recommend watching Marvel movies by release date for new Marvel movie watchers and chronological order or timeline order if you’ve already watched many or most of the Marvel movies.

The great thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is you don’t have to know all about Marvel comics. It certainly helps, but it’s not a necessity to engage with fan favorite characters like Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Peter Parker, Scott Lang, and more.

Deadpool 3 is the first Deadpool movie to be considered part of the MCU since Disney bought 20th Century Fox. However, now with all the storylines of the multiverses, nothing really makes sense anymore and anybody can talk to anybody.

List of Marvel Movies in Release Date Order

So you’re all in and want to watch all the Marvel movies? Release date order is the way I recommend watching the Marvel movies  for the first time. They jump around in a timeline, but half the fun is figuring out how the post-credits scenes intertwine and lead into other movies in the Marvel universe.

If you watch them in the order they were released, then you’ll start to piece together things on your own.

Here is the List of Marvel Movies by Release Date Order:

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)

Complete List of Marvel Movies in Chronological Order

How do you watch Marvel movies in the perfect order? I prefer Marvel movies in chronological order. This Marvel movies list is by the year the events happened. Marvel and Avengers movies like to jump around in time.

This is the list of Marvel movies in order by year to watch in real time sequence or as Disney+ likes to call it – Marvel movies in timeline order.

You’ll want to watch the Disney Plus shows WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier which happened after Avengers: Endgame if you really want to understand some things that happen in Phase 4.

Phase 4 is the post-Thanos snap.

Phase 4 and 5 Marvel TV Shows

If you want to understand some of the upcoming Marvel movies to watch The Marvels, then I recommend watching at least Loki, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion. WandaVision is just too good to skip.

  • WandaVision
  • The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
  • Loki
  • Hawkeye
  • Moon Knight
  • Ms. Marvel
  • She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
  • Secret Invasion
  • Echo

What to Watch Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day

At the very least watch Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way home.

If you want a better idea of what’s going on, I would throw in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Is watching Marvel movies in a certain order important? To my husband, yes. He does not like watching things out of sequence. It drives him crazy to not put the Marvel puzzle together ahead of time.

For someone like me, no. I like being entertained, and it doesn’t bother me if I have to backtrack. But now that the multiverses have been introduced, it’s all kind of chaotic. Truly I miss the old Marvel.

Marvel Movies for Kids

Some Marvel movies are not for all kids. For example Deadpool movies are not kid-friendly Marvel movies.

MCU watch order before Doctor Strange 2

I recommend screening the film or reading parent reviews first, because not all Marvel movies are created equally for kids, in my opinion. Black Panther was more violent than most and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had more language and sexual references than most Marvel films. And Doctor Strange 2 is violent and horror based.

  1. In Captain America, The winter Soldier, Dr. Stephen Strange is mentioned as one of the most important people to eliminate by Hydra. That made me doubt the chronological order.

  2. In ending scene of Civil War,Captain America and his friend bunny(correct me if I’m wrong) are in wakanda. That means whatever happened in black panther movie it happened before the arrival of Captain America and his friend right? But according to your chronological order black panther is last. I couldn’t understand that and tell where is Capitan America? If he is in wakanda why he wasn’t there in black panther..

    1. Bucky is taken to Wakanda at the end of Captain America at the end of Civil War. The events in Black Panther happen after Civil War, that’s why you see flashbacks of what happened in Civil War in Black Panther.

    2. In Civil War, the King of Wakanda is killed by the bomber. In Black Panther, the king is already dead, and we are watching the prince take his place. So, Black Panther takes place immediately after Civil War, I would say. Hopefully, this was helpful!

    1. It’s not part of the 18, because this list is movies to watch before Infinity War, and it’s not released in theaters until July. As far as when it takes place in the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp will be after the events if Civil War and before Infinity War.

      1. It would technically be at the same time as infinity war, because if you saw, the wasp, her dad, and her mom, were disintegrating therefore thanos’ s snap had just happened

  3. Doesn’t Thor:Ragnarok happen at the same time as Cuvil War?? Stark mentions they could use thor and hulk..?

    1. So Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor:Ragnarok happen relatively around the same time. Spider-Man: Homecoming is supposed to be a few months after Civil War, but then other evidence makes it taking place around 2020 which is impossible, because it definitely happens before Infinity War. So Marvel has some holes and says they don’t necessarily have a concrete timeline. They’ve said maybe on top of Civil War, maybe on top of Homecoming for Thor: Ragnarok.

      1. Well, they certainly have option no with time travel becoming a thing and the animal and wasp piddling in the quantum realm… Timelines will be easy to fix!

  4. I have absolutely nothing to comment other than Thank You.
I appreciate your time and knowledge to put this together and I’ve printed it and getting a late start, but gonna start just the same.
    Thanks!

  5. I do not see where Civil War is critical to the non-fan. A short synopsis of why the band broke up is plenty–spend 5 minutes rather than 147 minutes. I’m a fan, but trying to look at it from a non-fan perspective. What’s so critical about Civil War to understand Infinity War?

    1. Well honestly, for the non-fan I don’t think any movie is critical. They’re just there to be entertained. I added Civil War if people aren’t watching Black Panther. That way they have an introduction to him and also can see why the rift happened between Tony and Steve. It also introduces Spider-Man and his role, because Homecoming isn’t on the list.

    2. It sets up events of Infinity War, splits up the team to different locations and introduces Black Panther, Spider-Man and Ant-Man/Giant-Man to the team. So yes, it’s essential, for both Infinity War and Avengers 4.
It also deals with events of Avengers 1 and 2 and how common people reacted to them.

  6. I’m not a super fan so I’m a little confused about the inclusion of the Ed Norton Hulk (don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a great movie). I thought there was a new backstory provided for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk that swept the Ed Norton version under the rug. I clearly missed something – or made something up!!

    1. Well honestly, I try to forget about The Incredible Hulk film 🙂 However, it’s definitely still part of the MCU, and Ed Norton was recast by Mark Ruffalo. The Incredible Hulk wasn’t totally origin story and does connect some dots which is why I even included it in the list. However, I’d be ok if I never had to watch it again 😉

      1. well it does connectat at the end of the movie when after credit finishes….youll see stark going in to a bar to talk to the general and telling him about building a team

  7. The only series i like to watch which gives out all the super heros like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Cap, and many more.. Awesomeness

    1. She will be! Her movie comes out next year. If you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, then that’s her symbol in the credits. She is in the comics, but with the MCU, you never know how they’ll use her.

  8. Everytime I watch a Marvel Movie it makes me curious and makes me watch other Marvel Movies .
Thank you so much for this article. It’s a great help..

    1. Marvel Cinematic Universe consists only of 18 movies on the list and Infinity War (19th movie) so far. It’s created by Marvel Studios which are owned by Disney.

Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in separate universes and were created by Sony. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is borrowed by Disney from Sony (the two companies made BIG contract about all the conditions of such deal; basically – Disney has whole creative power over Spider-Man and can use him in their movies, but Sony gets most of the money of his solo movies).

X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four are owned by Fox. So it’s yet another universe.

    1. Age of Ultron was released before GoG Vol. 2, but if you’re talking chronological order, I disagree.

      1. If you watch Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, you can see that when the hulk left in Ultron, he appears on a planet when they are warping in GoG2. He end up there when he leaves the avengers

        1. I’ll have to go rewatch them and look for it! Feige implies that both Guardians movies take place in 2014, though he won’t say for sure while most saying Age of Ultron takes place in 2015, but even some dates in there are suspect.

          1. Ok, so I watched the scene that you’re talking about, and I don’t think it’s Hulk. I’ve got no proof to back it up either way, but to me, it doesn’t look like him. Also James Gunn said there would be zero chance we’d see Hulk in GotG Vol. 2, so I’m sticking to my story 😉

  9. G’day from Australia. After being treated to the newest Avengers movie by my kids on mothers day this year, I’m hooked. I’m so grateful that you made the list – not only one, but many so that we can have a choice!
I’m going to make the financial plunge and get them all in DVD for those moments when I’m not watching Netflix. I know that some are available on Netflix Australia – but sometimes they are withdrawn after a while. Coming into winter here – so get I’m going to get the blanket, popcorn and settle in. Again THANK YOU!

  10. I would definitely put Thor: Ragnarok to the short list. It ends with the beginning of Infinity War, there is direct follow up. So I consider the movie really essential. It also explains many things about why is Thor so different in Infinity War than in previous Avengers movies.

    1. I agree it’s important, but I’m trying to figure out whether it’s important to people who are already fans of the MCU or whether new fans would care. It’s difficult to separate the two. And I’m really wondering if it’s possible to have a “short list” 😉

      1. Well, I saw some reviews from people who was actually confused by the first scene of Infinity War, because they didn’t recognize Thor at first. He looked different, he didn’t have his famous weapon…
Since Avengers 1 and 2 are on the short list, I would really recommend Ragnarok too…

But of course, it’s your list, so it depends entirely on you.

          1. I agree with DasikCZ on Thor:Ragnorak, but also wanted to say thank you as well! A friend was going to see Infinity War with me until she confessed to having not seen most of the MCU, including both GotG 1 & 2 – so we saw Isle of Dogs instead. I told her I would give her a short list and a long list, and she could decide, then I would see Infinity War with her – you saved me a TON of research and decision-making!

          2. You’re welcome! And I love new Marvel fans. Once they start going down the rabbit hole, it’s fun to go along with them on the journey!

  11. I have watched captain america’s whole movie and iron man 1,2,3 and guardians of the galaxy both volumes, thor rganarok,avengers1,age of ultron, black panther, doctor strange…is this enough to watch infinity war??

    1. Yes, you’re good! After you watch Infinity War, you may feel the urge to watch the rest, you don’t have that many left. Be prepared, because Avengers: Infinity War is intense!

    2. I can’t get from your comment whether you’ve seen all Captain America movies, or just the first one.
If you haven’t watched Captain America: Civil War, I really recommend to see it before Infinity War. It contains big changes for Avengers group which are relevant in IW.

      1. I assumed he meant all the Captain America movies since he seemed committed from the rest of the films he watched

    1. Well they dissipated. There are different theories on where they went, but none confirmed by Marvel, and we most likely won’t know for sure until Avengers 4. Some say another dimension.

      1. I finally got to see Infinity War. Intense. I also watch all of the other 17 or 18 movies over the past few months to get caught up.

My thoughts on IW, as people were dissipating, is that they will show up in another universe or dimension in one of the sequels. Ahhh… the beauty of writing your own story line! lol The way I figure is that we know too much about quantum theory. That in and of itself leaves a lot of latitude for creative license. Also Thanos was moving between dimensions in IW, as was Dr Strange in both movies, unless I am misinterpreting. At any rate, it has been a lot of fun following your blog. I hadn’t seen any of these movies before Black Panther except that I probably saw Iron Man but didn’t connect it to the MCU. After Black Panther, it became apparent I had some catching up to do. The past few months has been an adventure. And your blog has been like gold. Good job!

  12. As a 44 year old Granny, I accidentally stumbled onto your site/list-of-lists as I pulled my phone from the mouth of my favorite Grand-daughter (well, in private I tell the BOTH that they are my favorite!! )Somehow, her cootie-filled mouth of slobber brought me from the land of Princess Poppy vs Bergens to you. After reading the comments while I was waiting for the charging port to de-slobber, I simply had to scream out—THANK YOU FOR THE TIME AND EFFORT YOU PUT INTO THESE LISTS. Which movie was released before which movie, who was mentioned in which movie first…… It saddened me that the message was lost… THESE ARE CHARACTERS YOU LOVE AND LABORED OVER, CHARACTERS MADE FOR
    ENTERTAINMENT! !!!!
You are a true fan, truest of all, by the tones of the comments.
Its Entertainment, a way to be transported somewhere else for a few hours, away from laundry, daily civil wars between sisters, emotional meltdowns over lost nail polish, theft of favorite socks, boyfriends and the O S**T, did I pay the electric bill???
AND THAT MAKES YOU A SUPERHERO AS WELL.
I APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORT. THANK YOU!!

  13. I grew up reading the Marvel Universe and have to say an individual needs to temporarily suspend the notion of disbelief. Nothing perfectly lays on top chronologically because the source material comes from iterations of the East and West coast Avengers. Another example is the source material for X-Men storylines come from the Uncanny X-Men and X-Men comics which exist simultaneously. As far as thee Thanos felled, I was hoping they would use the Seige Perilous (how mutants got brought back in the 80’s, e.g., Jean Grey as the Phoenix or Power Incarnate). I’m such a nerd.

    1. Well since they happen around the same time, I’m leaving Infinity War first, so that people understand the credit scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

      1. Ant-Man and the wasp. Took place at the exact same time as infinity war, but because he was in San Francisco Andy was on house arrest, he didn’t hear what happened in New York.

        1. Seems to me it would be more accurate to say Infinity War took place between Ant Man & the Wasp and the two closing credit Easter Eggs. It’s clear that time has passed between the end of the movie and the credit scenes because they had time to develop a smaller quantum tunnel. So the credit scenes coincide with the end of IW, but the body of the film takes place before it. If the producers had wanted us to believe they coincided, there were ample opportunities to include a reference. Given the multi-film epic they’re building, that omission could not have happened by accident. For this reason, and because the credit scenes make a nice teaser for IW, I would put AM&tW first.

          1. I’m hoping Endgame addresses what in the heck happened there, because how do you miss the news of New York falling apart?

  14. Black panther actually took place directly after civil war which means it shouldn’t be at the bottom of the chronological list.

  15. Thank you for the break down of the MCU. I have all the MCU movies and I wanted to put it together for my friend to check it out and watch. I looked at different web sites and yours is the best listing. You also explain in details about the movies as well. I read all the comments and you reply and answered every question or theory they had. I just had to say again Thank you for your site.

  16. Everything looks great! One thing I might add, you forgot “A funny thing happened on the way to Thor’s hammer”after IronMan 2 (technically it would take place DURING the credits, before the final ‘easter egg’ at the end of the credits.

    1. As in Wanda Maximoff? Or what? Cos she’s Scarlet Witch and I actually don’t think any of them will marry Thanos…

  17. I am SOOOOO glad I’ve found you!
The Marvel Universe has been part of our family since Iron Man came out when my kiddos were 9 and 17. They are now 19 and 27, and they are both off being grown ups in the world in towns far from home, so we rarely all troop off to the theaters together any more. Or buy movies for each other to watch. Alas, we no longer know who knows what in this world.
My youngest is home for the weekend and we discovered Black Panther on Netfix! FUN! But it made us realize how boggled we are. Time travel, inter dimensional travel, wait, what year did that come out? When was that character introduced? What happened to so and so after such and such LOL!
We will plan a marathon for the long Thanksgiving weekend as we will be together this year, and we will combine our collections. I had NO CLUE there were stones! Or any idea who the man in the credits teaser was. I’ve not yet seen Infinity Wars. I am going to wait on that one now until I am positive I’ve seen the others in order! So excited. Thank you Thank you Thank YOU for your devotion to this universe. The Clarity is delicious!

    1. Ha! Yes, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do, but plenty of time! A Thanksgiving marathon sounds fun!! Happy MCU watching 🙂

  18. In Captain America winter soldier,
They mentioned about Doctor Stephen Strange and they said that Hydra wants to eliminate the threat of him.. But in the sequence the story of doctor strange happens after 3 years.. What could be the exact time of doctor strange

    1. Arnim Zola was downloaded into a computer in 1972 and developed an algorithm that was used to predict threats to Hydra. It used the records of people’s past to predict their future before it happened. Therefore, the Stephen Strange that he was referring to hadn’t come into being yet.
Arnim Zola says HI to Captain America and Black Widow:

      Agent Sitwell explains Zola’s algorithm:

  19. Tania, you really put in work compiling this, and tailored it to different viewing preferences, well done! I think the Captain America movies (the best character titled movies of the MCU, though it can be argued Civil War was really an Avengers ensemble flick) should be part of the “must see” list. Whatever the post Endgame MCU looks like, Steve Rogers has been the most central figure through it all. You also don’t get to appreciate why Black Widow and he are so tight, where the heck Falcon came from, and who Bucky Barnes really is, without those films. Also, Captain America’s “renegade” status can’t be easily understood unless one sees him go through his disillusionment with the powers that be in Winter Soldier (also arguably THE best standalone movie in the MCU thus far). I also could never watch The First Avenger first, since the beginning and end occur right before The Avengers.

To newer viewers/fans, one thing I can say about watching them all, Tania was easing folks in, but if you end up liking what you see, you will have NO problem getting them all watched before April 26. Ours is a binge watching culture anyway. Avengers (Re)Assemble!

  20. I started watching the movies in the chronological order you posted, and I decided to make some changes. I’ve put together a new list, based on my preferences, that keeps everything relevant to the next movie in the list.

    PHASE 1
    Captain America the First Avenger
    Iron Man
    Iron Man 2
    Thor
    The Incredible Hulk
    Avengers

    PHASE2
    Iron Man 3
    Thor the Dark World
    Captain America the Winter Soldier
    Avengers Age of Ultron
    Ant-Man
    Captain America Civil War

    PHASE3
    Captain Marvel
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Black Panther
    Doctor Strange
    Spiderman Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
    Ant-Man and the Wasp
    Thor Ragnarok
    Avengers Infinity War
    Avengers Endgame

I’ve sorted it by phases, though this list obviously does not stick to the true MCU phases. I started with the main capstone event movies, Avengers, AvengersAOU, Captain America Civil War, and Infinity War+Endgame. My rule in sorting the movies was that all the movies before a capstone event movie needs to be relevant to and introduce characters we see in that final movie. So, it didn’t make sense to have Captain Marvel all the way at the beginning of the entire list, as she wasn’t in Avengers. Also, it made more sense to move all of the cosmic stuff to the final phase, so GotG 1 and 2 made more sense there. Plus, Captain Marvel introduces Ronan, who is the main villain in GotG, so that was a natural lead in. Finally, GotG brought in Thanos as a full character and really sets up Phase 3 for his story. Ant-Man and the Wasp made more sense just before Infinity War, but Thor Ragnarok was a much better lead-in. The end credits scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp can be taken as foreshadowing. You don’t really know what happened to them, so for someone watching the movies for the first time it’s close enough to Infinity War that they should remember that end credits scene.

With this 3 Phase model, it’s kind of like watching three seasons of a TV show, instead of staring down a 21 movie marathon. Much easier to binge watch.

    1. Thank you for this! I love hearing other people’s perspectives and I totally get why you would separate them like this!

  21. I have been watching these in the Chronological order you provided with the TV Shows incorporated. My only question is where should I watch Iron Fist Season 2?

    1. Sorry about that! Thanks for the catch. You should watch after Luke Cage Season 2 and before Daredevil Season 3!

  22. Thank you so much for this list, Tania. My room mate Paul doesn’t understand why Deadpool and the X-Men movies shouldn’t be put in the MCU folder. Now that I see that they are owned by Sony and Fox, etc, I will show him your site so he gets it. Who owns Ghost Rider? He would make some decent back-up in any fight. Though,… not exactly a team player. 🙂

  23. Thank you for these lists. After having watched all these movies a few times, I wanted to watch them again, this time focusing only on the story of the Infinity Stones. I like your list of 6 movies that have to do with the stones, but i wanted to opine that a story no one (at least that I have read) has pointed out, central to the story of the infinity stones, is the Thor story arc. Its not surprising that of the original Avengers, his story is still going (Thor 4) and the others have ended. Its been Loki’s quest for power that have linked all these characters. And I say its difficult to watch only the movies with stones in it, leading up to Infinity and Endgame, without watching all Thor movies. In Thor 1, we begin with Loki’s break from his brother and alliance with Thanos, which eventually brings us to the first Avengers movie. In Thor 2 we see the reality stone in the Esther. In Thor 3 find out what happened to the Hulk, Thor’s hammer and why he no longer has a home and is floating out in space when we see him again in Infinity War. Just a thought.

    1. Those are all great thoughts, I appreciate it! I tried to keep the list short just because I figured that one would be for people who just wanted something quick or for those who wanted to watch from a different perspective than chronological or release date. I am curious how the Loki series on Disney+ will factor into the Thor arc.

  24. I just love to have this page. I have read entire blog for the 10 times. And thanks to gave the list of marvel movies. I love to watch them the whole of my life becoz it always brings me the new anergy and feels me fresh. You really did a grt job for the marvel lovers. Not even I have already planned for my kid to gift all these movies on his each birthday.

  25. It’s like nerd heaven! When I was growing up, I never thought we’d get as many superhero movies as we are getting now. I mean, this a very interesting article and I found something like this on comicyears.com. Marvel Comics movies guide I found lists something like five dozen movies all based on Marvel books. Even Men in Black came from Marvel (or a publisher they owned, lol). Check it out here https://comicyears.com/movies/marvel-comics-movies-guide/ , it’s a good read.

  26. We’re watching through the complete list, including the Netflix series and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Out of curiosity, where would you insert the Inhumans and Runaways series? I watched Inhumans when it aired and I’m inclined to insert it after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., season 2. I’ve never seen Runaways.

    1. That’s a big undertaking, good luck! I would probably watch Inhumans after AoS Season 5 if you want to watch it chronologically. And I hate to say this, but Inhumans just wasn’t good, so I tend to write it off. Runaways is around the same timeline, too, so I would watch it after Inhumans or AoS Season 5. And thank you for the reminder, I need to update my timeline!

  27. Do your writers review their content before submitting it for online users? The reason I ask is because I hadn’t even started reading this article and I noticed this faux pax after the colon straight away…

Lists of All the Marvel Movies in Order Before Spider-Man: Now Way Home

Just thought you should see and know that although mistakes have always occurred in newspapers, at least we knew they were typically given the once over before running the presses.

Sorry, just seems like no one cares about their errors if it’s online since everyone’s in a rush to hit the enter button. Quantity over quality is not good…especially if your next “could be” boss reads it.

    1. Thank you! Sometimes mistakes are made and errors get overlooked. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

  28. Are The Eternals in important in the MCU, my son and I started watching all the movies but don’t want to watch that one. I can’t see the significance regarding the rest of the movies as I feel like it stands alone.

    1. I don’t think you need to watch it. Nothing in the plot is super important for the rest of the MCU.
