Spider-Man: Brand New Day is an emotional roller coaster. With heightened Spidey senses comes heightened maturity. As Peter Parker navigates a life without his friends, the film can get sad and depressing. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) continues his Spider-Man duties in helping fight crime in NYC without the help of his best friends, Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya). Since Doctor Strange cast his memory-altering spell, everyone who knew Spider-Man was Peter Parker has forgotten him. He watches from afar as Ned and MJ attend MIT and has a lonely day-to-day routine. When a new villain emerges that can jump into people’s bodies, Peter must do everything in his power to stop them and keep his friends safe.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Age Rating
Why is Spider-Man: Brand New Day rated PG-13? For language and action/violence sequences which means some content is not suitable for kids under 13 years old.
Parents should know that this Spider-Man is more mature and some themes may be too difficult for younger children to understand. Violence is pretty typical Marvel.
Language
This film does have a lot of profanity, especially from Frank aka The Punisher. There are a lot of uses of sh*t including bullsh*t and horsesh*t. There are a few uses of a** and jacka**. There are about 6 uses of g-ddamn as well as other uses of Deity including Jesus Christ and oh my g-d. There are also at least 8 uses of hell and one use of mother f*cker, but the *cker is never finished.
Violence: Is Spider-Man Brand New Day Too Scary for Kids?
This film includes typical Marvel violence – use of weapons like guns, destruction, explosions, fight scenes, hand-to-hand combat, characters and innocent people in peril. There are also scenes of mind control and a character suffering, not being able to control themselves. Some kids may be confused when some good guys start fighting each other.
Mature Content
There is no nudity in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but you do see characters in a bath house in underwear.
Some characters kiss and talk of being in love.
Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Appropriate for Kids Under 12?
You can expect some Marvel violence, profanity, and deep emotional character scenes. To sum it up, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is kid friendly for ages 12 and older. Can kids younger than that watch and be ok? Sure. Especially if they’ve seen the other Spider-Man films and/or some other Marvel films. The reason I say this film may be less kid-friendly than others is because it isn’t just Spider-Man and pals fighting against the bad guys and hopefully coming out on top. Peter is fighting against himself and the demons within while struggling with grief and loneliness. Essentially he’s more human. That may be difficult for younger kids to understand if they are just wanting a straight superhero flick.
However, this complexity makes for an even greater character arc for Spider-Man and Tom Holland really steps up to the challenge. Tom Holland is at his best with a more mature Spider-Man and depth. Some of the action scenes are magical and that Spidey suit is incredible.
The rest of the cast is equally as great with Sadie Sink being a standout. I don’t know that we needed all of the extra character crossovers, but they did provide welcome comic relief. I have suffered from Marvel multiverse fatigue lately, and this helped alleviate some of that.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day truly was a roller coaster, and I didn’t want to get off. Even through all 2 hours and 25 minutes.
