Is Last Christmas Movie Kid or Teen Friendly?

From the trailers I was expecting Last Christmas to be a romcom, aka a romantic comedy. It wasn’t. That being said, it did have some redeeming qualities. But is Last Christmas kid friendly? Definitely not. Is it teen friendly? My teenage daughter will be skipping it, but I can understand why some teens would like it. Be aware of the language and sexual content in this Last Christmas parent guide, because there’s a lot.

Is Last Christmas Kid Friendly?

Last Christmas is rated PG-13 for language and sexual content, and I would agree with that rating. If your kids or teens are fans of the Hallmark Channel, then they may want to see this movie, because it seems cute like a Hallmark movie. But it’s not a Hallmark movie.

Language in Last Christmas

There is quite a bit of language and British slang like bugger, bloody hell, and piss off. I counted at least 8 uses of  sh–, 1 damn, 4 hells, and about 12 combinations of g-d or Jesus Christ. There’s one scene that takes a joke too far and I lost count at 10 uses of the word dick and 8 uses of penis. It all transpired in about a minute.

Sexual Content in Last Christmas

Kate, played by Emilia Clarke, is a young woman who has made some poor decisions in life. She talks a lot about sex and one can infer that she’s sexually promiscuous. There’s no nudity,and you don’t see any character having sex.

There’s a shower scene where a character gets caught cheating, there’s some kissing, sexual phrases like, “I will nail you to my dick,” “There’s bigger nuts?,” and “Did you shag him?”

Is Last Christmas a Romantic Comedy?

The reason I say Last Christmas isn’t a romcom is because I didn’t find it very romantic or funny, however that doesn’t mean audiences won’t like it. There’s a message. And I can see what they were trying to do with Last Christmas. I’m not mad about the ending or the twist; it was just illogical. I couldn’t get past the loopholes in the story, even as someone who appreciates fantasy and fairytales.

Emilia Clarke is a star in everything she’s in, and she’s likable in this film even when she’s not. Her character loves George Michael songs, and really can we blame her?

Ever since Crazy Rich Asians, Henry Golding has quickly become a favorite, but in this movie he wasn’t given the chance to really develop into someone I could connect with. He’s handsome and charming, but with a few tweaks to the storyline, they could have done more with him.

Even with familiar stories of overbearing and complicated family relationships during the holidays or misunderstood bosses, Last Christmas just doesn’t provide relatable characters unless your parents are anxious Yugoslavian immigrants. They had all the right elements, just all the wrong execution.

Give Last Christmas a try if you need an entertaining semi-holiday movie with your girlfriends. But leave the kids and possibly teens at home.
