Wondering if Home Alone is ok for kids? Home Alone is one of those Christmas movies from the 90s, well 1990, that I just couldn’t remember if it was appropriate for kids. Is Home Alone kid friendly? Rated PG for language and some violence, here’s what parents need to know in this Home Alone Parents Guide.
Is Home Alone Kid Friendly?
When 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother (Catherine O’Hara) makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. But his partying alone is interrupted when he realizes that two con men (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) plan to rob the McCallister residence, and that he alone must protect the family home.
There may be a few scenes that frighten little kids.
What is Home Alone Rated?
Home Alone is rated PG for language and slapstick violence which means it may not be suitable for all ages.
Language
There is some language in Home Alone including a couple of uses of a**, sh**, bit*h, damn, and hell. There are also other words like jerk, idiot, moron, jerkface, dummy, stupid, and cajones that are said.
Mature Content
There is a lot of name calling and general rudeness towards each other throughout the movie (idiot, incompetent, egghead, etc.)
Two boys talk of French babes and shaving and nude beaches.
Kevin starts a fight will Buzz after being teased.
The basement furnace starts to come alive in Kevin’s imagination and scares him.
Kevin opens his older brother’s trunk and finds a Playboy magazine that he takes out and looks at.
There are pictures of girls in bikinis on Buzz’s wall in the background.
Kevin does many reckless, potentially dangerous activities while home alone (jumping on beds, climbing up shelves, running from police, defending his home against burglars).
On a movie played on the tv a mobster guns down another man (scene is played 3 times)
Kevin shoots the burglars with a BB gun.
Some characters drink alcohol.
A fake Santa Claus is seen smoking a cigarette.
Is Home Alone Appropriate For Kids Under 10?
There are plenty of hijinks and silly Home Alone quotes that will make kids laugh. I would recommend it for kids ages 10 and older. Although the thought of Kevin being left home is funny to some, some kids may be sad to see a young child left, even by accident.
There are also a couple of scenes with the burglars that could frighten young children. But as Kevin feels threatened, he does what it takes to protect his home, so he sets traps for them. Several scenes show the intruders get hurt by being hit in the head with an iron, stepping on sharp items, getting burned, etc. Kevin can be bratty at times and wishes he didn’t have a family, but everyone learns important lessons.
Home Alone is a fun, classic Christmas movie for many families.
