Wondering if The Addams Family is ok for kids? Let’s just say I didn’t love 2019’s The Addams Family. I was hoping to, but all the creepy turned into cheesy. Although an animated film, is The Addams Family kid friendly? Meh. And should you bring kids to see The Addams Family? If they like macabre and ghoulish things, sure. If not, then I suggest sitting this one out.

Is The Addams Family Kid Friendly?
If you’ve seen any of the previous versions of The Addams Family, then you know this family is supposed to be creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky. That’s what we love about them.
I don’t know if they toned them down for this 2019 animated version of The Addams Family, but overall it’s kid friendly. However, they also watered down the weirdness that made me fall in love The Addams Family in the first place.
What is The Addams Family Rated?
The Addams Family is rated PG for language and creepy content.
Language in The Addams Family
As far as language is concerned, there were no uses of profanity in The Addams Family. One character did say, “Oh my g-d, oh my g-d, oh my g-d, several times.”
Violence
The violence in The Addams Family was mostly on the tamer side, but there are knife fights, explosions, villagers trying to come after The Addams Family, things set on fire, etc. There’s definitely a darker, creepy element to this film, especially at the beginning of the movie, so just be careful of the young ones maybe 6 and under who can’t separate fantasy from reality.
There’s a bit of a scary scene at the beginning involving Lurch.
Mature Content
For younger kids, they may not get some of the humor like, “Make yourself uncomfortable” or “So disappointed to see you.” There are a few kisses amongst characters.
And when referring to middle school, one character says it’s where friends turn on each other and girls make other girls feel bad about themselves. There’s also a scene where pants fall down on several characters and you see them in shorts.
Is The Addams Family Appropriate for Children Under 8?
I would recommend the animated The Addams Family for children 6 and up as far as appropriate content is concerned. However, I found it to be dull and slow at times, so I don’t know that there’s enough action or humor to hold the attention of little ones.
There are some silly additions where Wednesday and Pugsley play pranks on each other and typical middle school girl drama which some older kids can relate to. There are goofy quips and silly additions where pants fall down, things blow up for laughs, and Uncle Fester can always entertain, so The Addams Family is not all bad.
Overall, though, the script was predictable and dry and some of the character voices just didn’t give me enough kooky, weird, and something I wanted, which made me sad, because the cast is stellar!
As members of the Addams family — Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Uncle Fester and Grandma — are preparing for a visit from their even creepier relatives, trouble soon arises when shady TV personality Margaux Needler realizes that the Addams’ eerie hilltop mansion is standing in the way of her dream to sell all the houses in the neighborhood, named Assimilation. Get it? Yeah, we all got it. Too much.
There are heartwarming lessons to be learned amongst family members and neighbors, but the messages aren’t subtle and are fed to the audience. “We shouldn’t judge them, because they’re different.” Sure, 100% on board with this, but I prefer when the messages are woven into the storyline, and it’s a conclusion we draw for ourselves.
Is The Addams Family kid friendly? The Addams Family makes for a fun-ish Halloween film that is safe for most kids to watch; I just wish the movie had as much personality as the theme song did. Stay for the theme song after The Addams Family ends, but there are no end credits or stingers you need to stay for.
Addams Family 2 Parents Guide
The Addams Family returns and are going on a road trip! There is more of the same in The Addams Family 2 including potty humor, crude humor, and dark themes. There is no profanity, but there are uses of Deity.
Is Addams Family 2 too scary for kids? No, I’d recommend it for kids 8 and up. There is nothing new or innovative in the sequel to The Addams Family, but it’ll give some kids some laughs, especially those who love poop humor.
