Viola Davis plays a fierce, noble 1800s warrior in the West African kingdom of Dahomey, named General Nanisca. The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors who protected Dahomey. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. 

Age Rating: Why is The Woman King Rated PG-13?

The Woman King is rated PG-13 for some strong violence, partial nudity, and language which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 13.

Is The Woman King Kid Friendly? 

The Woman King is quite violent and not really recommended for young kids. Parents can expect a lot of killings, death, fighting, some partial nudity, and mature content like rape and domestic violence. To sum it up, The Woman King is not kid friendly. However the story could be impactful for some teens.

There is not much profanity except the use of “bi*ches” in subtitles.

There is a lot of fighting and violence in The Woman King. An emotional story also includes emotional deaths. Characters are stabbed and their throats are slit. Battle scenes are intense and powerful. Weapons like knives, spears, and ropes are used. 

Some non-sexual partial nudity of a man’s backside is shown while bathing in a river. 

There is implied sex but nothing is shown on-screen. Flashbacks of rape are shown which may be triggering for some viewers.  The king has many wives.

Slavery is discussed.

Some characters drink alcohol.

Is The Woman King Appropriate for Kids Under 13?

In The Woman King you can expect violence, fighting, and death. To sum it up, The Woman King is not kid friendly for kids younger than 10 years old. Also, at a run time of over 2 hours, some kids may not find The Woman King appealing enough to hold their interest for that long. 

Sure there will be comparisons of The Woman King to the Dora Milaje in Black Panther, but this is much more. No, it isn’t a history lesson and don’t expect to use it as one. There has been some controversy surrounding the film, mostly criticism that the film doesn’t talk in depth that the Dahomey tribe sold other Africans into slavery.

However, Viola Davis is magnificent in the film. So take what you will from The Woman King, but Viola David certainly slays and deserved an Oscar nomination.
