The Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020 is a live-action family film, but is Sonic the Hedgehog kid friendly? Here’s what parents need to know about language, violence, and mature content in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie before taking little ones. And with all the live action remakes, does the Sonic Movie do the Sega video game justice?
Is Sonic the Hedgehog Kid Friendly?
Is the Sonic Movie kid friendly? Sonic the Hedgehog is rated PG for action, some violence, rude humor and brief mild language. The Sonic movie is generally safe for kids with a few things to watch for like fart jokes and a couple of bad words, but nothing major.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is based on the video game from Sega that centers on Sonic the blue hedgehog. The film follows the adventures of Sonic as he navigates life on Earth quite lonely in the town of Green Hills, Montana until he’s noticed by the government, which views him as a potential threat and sends in Dr. Robotnik to investigate.
Sonic inadvertently finds his newfound (human) best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and his rings.
There were a couple uses of hell and one son of a bit…that doesn’t quite get finished. Also, there are about 5 uses of omg or thank g-d. Words like stupid and idiot are also used.
There are some violent scenes in Sonic the Hedgehog that could be scary for young children like explosions, bar fights, and Dr. Robotnik trying to kill Sonic. This is certainly no Avengers movie, but there are tense situations. In the bar scene, several punches are thrown and a big fight ensues.
The bar scene shows people drinking alcohol and a fight. There is also talk of divorce and loneliness. Also be mindful of a lot of jokes about farting.
Is Sonic Movie Appropriate for Kids Under 8?
I would recommend Sonic the Hedgehog for ages 6 and older due to the length of the film. At 1 hour and 40 minutes, it could feel long for young kids. Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog is kid friendly and family friendly, and my 7-year-old daughter loved it! Some younger kids may also be scared due to mild violence and Dr. Robotnik’s vengeance for Sonic. And be aware of the potty humor that your young ones will probably repeat.
Does Sonic the Hedgehog stay true to the video game? Listen, when those first trailers came out, Sonic was looking rough. The redesign was much more kid friendly and not as scary looking. Sonic is snarky without being jerky, just like he should be.
I used to play the old Sonic, and I loved the nods to the video game throughout the film. I won’t ruin all the surprises, but the novelty is there. It may not be enough to satisfy the total diehards, but what can you do?
Dr. Robotnik is craaazy, and that’s what makes it so fun! Jim Carrey is on. This is the Jim Carrey I’ve been missing lately – over the top and fabulous – like back in the In Living Color days. With Dr. Robotnik quotes like, “I’m the top banana in a world full of monkeys,” I was highly amused.
As soon as my kids ask to see a movie again, I know it’s a success. It entertained my youngest child (7 years old) to my oldest (15 years old). And yes, I liked it better than Detective Pikachu. I said what I said.
The action scenes were intense enough without being over the top, Dr. Robotnik had the right amount of evil without spilling over into demonic, there was slapstick humor for everyone, the CGI and graphics were awesome, and yes, those cheesy, ‘hug your neighbor’ messages were sprinkled throughout.
People say family movie like it’s a dirty word. I want more family films, please!
Do you need to stay for the end credit scenes? Yes! Don’t leave without seeing the Sonic Easter eggs.
Sonic the Hedgehog is what a family movie should be – entertaining, delightful, a good story, fun for all ages, and packed with life lessons. If you can’t enjoy this one, I don’t know what to tell you. Race to the theater to see this Sonic movie!
Sonic the Hedgehog is in theaters February 14, 2020!
