A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is yes, a movie, about Mr. Rogers, but he’s not the primary focus. Is A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood kid friendly? No, this one isn’t for kids. Although it’s rated PG, the subject matter is heavy for young children. However, this is a movie for adults, because we can all learn from the lessons of kindness, forgiveness, and perseverance of the human spirit.

Is A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Kid Friendly?
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is the story about how a journalist’s life (Lloyd Vogel) is enriched by friendship when he takes on an assignment profiling Mr. Rogers. It’s based on the real-life friendship between journalist Tom Junod and television star Fred Rogers.
Based on language, violence, and mature content, I don’t think this PG-movie is ok for kids, but here are the details, and parents can decide.
Language
I counted at least 1 damn, 4 uses of hell, and 2 uses of “oh my g-d.”
Violence
Two characters get in a fight and punches are thrown.
Mature Content
This story is more about Lloyd Vogel’s life, and he’s cynical, has a temper, and has complicated family relationships, aka daddy issues. So while Lloyd is supposed to be interviewing him, Mister Rogers is also asking him questions about his personal life which opens the door for dissection of these more complicated issues.
Should You Take Teens to see the Mister Rogers Movie?
Although A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is not kid friendly, should you take teens? I think fans of Mister Rogers will want to see more of Mister Rogers on screen, and they’re not going to get it. You’ll feel a bit of nostalgia as you get a glimpse of filming the iconic opening song and even when Daniel Tiger makes an appearance.

The messages are important for adults and teens alike, but I don’t know if it will hold their interest. The movie is a little slow-moving, and Mister Rogers is portrayed as the kind, soft-spoken human being he was. His patience is admirable, and you get a peek into some of the demons he himself was fighting, especially as the comment about having him as a father couldn’t have been easy for his sons.
Honestly, I wanted more Tom Hanks/Fred Rogers screen time, but it was interesting getting to be an observer on an almost 2 hour therapy session. From the get-go, you’ll get A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Quotes like, “Do you know what forgiveness means? It’s a decision we make to release a person from the feelings of anger we have against them.”
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is indeed beautiful. So if you go watch the Mister Rogers movie (and I recommend you do), be prepared to learn and open your heart, but don’t expect a biography about Mister Rogers.
