Is How The Grinch Stole Christmas Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Wondering if How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is ok for kids? Can you believe that it’s been 20 years since Jim Carrey starred as the Grinch in this live-action version? Rated PG for language and rude humor, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is not kid friendly for some young ones and is edgier than the animated version. Here’s what parents need to know in How the Grinch Stole Christmas Parents Guide.

Is How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) Kid Friendly?

In this live-action adaptation of the children’s tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive Grinch (Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the happy citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to steal everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the sweet Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).

Language

There is one use of profanity – bi*chin – as well as words like hell, idiot, hate, fat, and phrases like shut you up.

Mature Content

The Grinch puts mistletoe by his butt and says “now pucker up and kiss it whoville” and shakes his butt in the camera.

The Grinch says, “If you utter so much as one syllable, I’ll hunt you down and gut you like a fish!”

A car explodes and there is a scary scene where everyone is screaming and running from the Grinch.

A scene shows termites and bugs crawling on the Grinch’s teeth. The Grinch can be scary at times with his evil grins and laughs.

A guy tells a scary story about how the Grinch only comes down from his cave when he’s hungry for Who flesh.

The Grinch throws his dog out of his cave.

The Grinch falls on top of Martha May and his face is in her chest and other males ogle women.

Is How the Grinch Stole Christmas Appropriate for Kids Under 10?

Whenever you have a live-action adaptation of a cartoon, then you usually get more mature content. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is no exception. There are crude jokes and rude humor, which may not fly with parents for younger kids.

The jokes go over their heads, but they’re usually the ones who repeat phrases. I’d recommend How the Grinch Stole Christmas for kids over 10 years old, but you could definitely go younger for those who won’t be scared of the Grinch. Jim Carrey does a good job of being menacing.

Parents need to know that How the Grinch Stole Christmas is kid friendly for most, but there are crude jokes and some scary situations for little ones. I still prefer the animated version.
