Is Coming 2 America Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Wondering if Coming 2 America is ok for kids? Coming 2 America is rated PG-13 for sexual content, drug use, and language. This sequel-ish may satisfy fans of the original, but I don’t know that it will entertain anybody else. Although this is a PG-13 rating, some of the jokes are really crude and center on date rape and even transphobia. Here’s what parents need to know in this Coming 2 America Parents Guide.

Coming 2 America Parents Guide

Set in Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an another adventure to Queens, New York where it all began, for a search of an illegitimate son. However, Akeem now has 3 daughters, and one has her eyes on the throne, but Zamunda laws will not allow a female to inherit the throne. When Akeem finds out he has a son, he wants to bring him back to Zamunda, to the dismay of others.

Most of the gang is back for Coming 2 America which will bring about some nostalgia for fans of the original. It was good to have them back, and parts of the film felt similar to Coming to America, even decades later. The sequel earned a PG-13 rating rather than the R rating of its predecessor.

Parents need to know that Coming 2 America does have sexual content, crude jokes, drug use, and some profanity.

There are uses of sh*t, a**, bi*ch, hell, damn, tit, ho, pimp, and bastard. There are also uses of Deity like “oh my g-d” and g-ddamn.

Mature Content

There are jokes that contain sexual content, like “an heir with a nut sack” or the most “perfect vagina.” In the barbershop scene, there are a lot of  inappropriate jokes about you how you can’t even squeeze a tit nowadays without getting fired. Or how you can turn a penis into a vagina now.

Some characters use drugs and then a character is shown on top of another, clothed, but thrusting on top of him, and essentially rapes him, but it is used as a joke and basis for the film.

Some characters are bathed by royal bathers. One is seen coming out of the bath saying the royal privates have been washed.

There is some mild violence when there is an attempted kidnapping on the princess and she must defend herself.

Is Coming 2 America Appropriate for Kids Under 14?

Coming 2 America is not as good as the first, let’s get that out of the way. Will teens find this film funny? Perhaps. There are some humorous moments, some modern musical numbers, and a lot of hoopla. There are also some very talented actors in the cast – from the original – and new additions like Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones.

However, sometimes the irreverent tone is too much. They say comedy can be brutal, and while others find it funny, the butt of the jokes may find it offensive. Personally, I think good writing doesn’t have to be controversial, but others disagree. I got tired of listening to Akeem refer to his son as his “bastard son.”

I do wish there was more of Murphy. His ability to play many roles is impressive, and I really liked Akeem in Coming to America. In the sequel, all his charming characteristics became muted.

Costumes are gorgeous, but Coming 2 America lacks appeal, even with its over-the-top characters. Some of the jokes are just gross and cross the line, which is unfortunate, because you have the talent to pull off so much more. I wouldn’t recommend Coming 2 America for kids under 14.
