Cocaine Bear Parents Guide: Is it Ok for Teens?

Wondering if Cocaine Bear is ok for kids and teens? Well if you’re ok with blood, gore, and a bear who goes on a killing rampage after eating a whole lot of cocaine, then I guess so. Here’s what parents need to know in this Parents Guide to Cocaine Bear

Cocaine Bear Parents Guide

Inspired (loosely) by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound predator bear has ingested a large amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow and blood.

No, really, that’s what the movie is about. While the true story is about a bear who found cocaine and ate it, she did not go on the killing spree that this movie suggests. So there’s a lot more artistic liberties taken here for a comedic gore fest.

Keri Russell plays Sari, a mom who has gone into the woods to look for her 12-year old daughter Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) who has skipped school and her friend, Henry (Christian Converey). Meanwhile Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) and Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich), need to find the cocaine for Eddie’s father, a drug lord. Who will be the bear’s latest victims?

Age Rating: Why is Cocaine Bear Rated R?

Cocaine Bear is Rated R for bloody violence and gore, language, and drug content which means some content is not suitable for kids under 17.

Violence: Is Cocaine Bear Too Scary for Kids?

Cocaine Bear is violent, bloody, and gory and involves many scenes that will be too scary for kids. Teens who love blood and gore may enjoy the scenes of dismemberment, decapitation, and body parts being chewed and ripped apart. For example the bear snorts cocaine off of a dismembered leg.

There is a lot of blood and a scene that shows young bear cubs eating a victim’s intestine.

Characters drink alcohol and smoke.

Is Cocaine Bear Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

Cocaine Bear is not for kids just as the title suggests. A bear on coke killing a bunch of people just isn’t appropriate for tweens either. You can expect graphic violence and gore in Cocaine Bear, so it’s not kid-friendly.

However, Cocaine Bear is also a dark comedy, meant to be campy, over-the-top, and extreme. If teens are mature enough to understand the concept and parents are ok with the violence and gore, then enjoy the film for what it is. There are many ‘WTF am I watching’ moments.

The supporting cast is quite a list of stars that lean into the absurdity. If gory, funny horror is your thing, then you’ll have a blast. If you go into a film titled Cocaine Bear and are expecting something more, well it’s hard for me to feel bad for you.
