The Best Type of Butterbeer at Universal Orlando
If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, then you more than likely have heard of Butterbeer – a delicious drink that the characters in Harry Potter drink at the Three Broomsticks Inn. What does Butterbeer taste like? It’s often described as a Butterscotch flavor, which I would say is accurate. But although they have that kind of butterscotch base, all Butterbeers do not taste the same.
Some people describe it as cream soda-like, too, but I would say it’s more Butterscotch. With 6 different types of Butterbeer offered at Universal Studios in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which Butterbeer is best? For me, the winners are Hot Butterbeer and Frozen Butterbeer.

Frozen Butterbeer
#1 -Frozen Butterbeer
The best type of Butterbeer in Universal Orlando is Frozen Butterbeer according to the unofficial poll I conducted among friends and family! I like the texture of a slush, and it also helps minimize the sweetness. Plus the foam on top is divine. If you like super sweet, then another version of Butterbeer might be for you.
You can find Frozen Butterbeer in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley in several locations.
Diagon Alley: Leaky Cauldron, The Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune
Hogsmeade: Three Broomsticks, Hog’s Head pub and Butterbeer street carts
This Homemade Frozen Butterbeer Recipe you can make in less than 10 minutes at home!
Hot Butterbeer
#2 – Hot Butterbeer
I’m a hot chocolate fanatic, so I put off trying Hot Butterbeer for a long time. I don’t like Hot Apple Cider or things like that, so it just didn’t interest me. Well when I visited during Running Universal‘s races in the month of February, it was cold!! So I tried it for the need of warmth.
It was good, really good. This version of Butterbeer is really sweet, but that Butterscotch flavor was delicious, and I ended up drinking a few cups during our trip. Hot Butterbeer is seasonal and only available during the winter season. Hot Butterbeer is my number one choice of Butterbeer at Universal Orlando when it’s cold outside. It’s still my number two when it’s warm outside.
Find Hot Butterbeer in:
Diagon Alley: Leaky Cauldron, The Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune
Hogsmeade: Three Broomsticks (You can also get some at the bar at Three Broomsticks if you don’t want to wait for a table.)
Butterbeer Ice Cream
#3 – Butterbeer Ice Cream
Maybe I like Butterbeer really cold, but Butterbeer ice cream is creamy and delicious! It’s got a great flavor, and I also like soft serve ice cream. Although this is my favorite, don’t be afraid to try other flavors at Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour. I haven’t tried a flavor I didn’t like. Salted Caramel Blondie is my second favorite.
They also serve pre-packaged Butterbeer ice cream at Three Broomsticks and Leaky Cauldron, so get it if you’re dying to have some, but it’s not the same as the soft serve. Plus the serving size is less.
Find Butterbeer Ice Cream in:
Diagon Alley: Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour, The Hopping Pot
Regular Butterbeer (Cold Butterbeer)
#4 Cold Butterbeer
You can’t go wrong with the original Butterbeer. The first time I tried it, I liked it! It still has a good flavor, but is a tad sweeter than the frozen, which is why I prefer the Frozen Butterbeer. But I know plenty of people who prefer regular Butterbeer to all the others.
My suggestion: Try them all!
You can find Regular Butterbeer in:
Diagon Alley: Leaky Cauldron, The Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune
Hogsmeade: Three Broomsticks, Hog’s Head pub and Butterbeer street carts
Butterbeer Fudge
#5 Butterbeer Fudge
Butterbeer fudge is good, but it’s not something I have to have every trip. The best thing about it is that it’s portable.
So if you want some Butterbeer for later, you can save it carry it around. It’s also a great present to bring home! It makes people less mad at you when you visit Universal Orlando without them.
You can find Butterbeer Fudge in the candy stores:
Diagon Alley: Sugarplum’s Sweetshop
Hogsmeade: Honeydukes
Butterbeer Potted Cream
#6 Butterbeer Potted Cream
So this form of Butterbeer is not my favorite, but I’m also a texture person, and it’s too much like pudding. If given the choice, I’d choose all the other types of Butterbeer first. However, I have a friend who would choose Butterbeer Potted Cream over any type of Butterbeer.
You can find Butterbeer Potted Cream in:
Hogsmeade: Three Broomsticks
Diagon Alley: Leaky Cauldron
So there you have it, the ranking from best to worst Butterbeer at Universal Studios! I want to know what your favorite type of Butterbeer is! Leave it in the comments.
