What Happened to Bo Peep in Toy Story? She’s Back for Toy Story 4!

If you were like me and wondered what in the world happened to Bo Peep in Toy Story 3, now you’ll get your answers in Toy Story 4. After visiting Pixar Studios in April, I got the information on what happened to Bo Peep. Bo Peep is one of the main reasons that there is a Toy Story 4. Bo has a new look and a new attitude in Toy Story 4, and she’s why I’m so excited about this new adventure.

What Happened to Bo Peep in Toy Story?

We had an entire presentation on Bo Peep during our visit to Pixar Studios, and I have to say it was my favorite one. So, where has Bo Peep been? 

In scenes from Toy Story 1 and 2, we know Bo is part of a lamp, is made of porcelain, and she’s the caretaker of 3 sheep, that are part of the lamp. She is sweet, a little bit of a damsel in distress, and is very close to Woody. She’s a supporting character and you rarely, if ever, see a close-up of her.

In Toy Story 3, Woody mentions that some of the toys that didn’t make it were either given away, sold in yard sales, thrown out, possibly broken, or donated. Nobody really knows what happened to Bo Peep.

Want to know the best part of the presentation about Bo Peep? It was given by a panel of women. Women who work at Pixar. Women who helped decide what Bo Peep would look like, what her new clothes would look like, what her attitude would be, what her role would be…

Bo Peep is a lost toy in Toy Story 4.

She doesn’t have a kid, but she has plenty of adventures and new friends.

Bo didn’t want to sit on a shelf and wait for life to happen. 

Bo doesn’t play by the same toy rules.

The new Bo is tough and caring.

When Bo Peep meets Woody again, she comes in looking like a snack and a superhero in one. 

How Bo Peep’s New Look Happened

When thinking about Bo Peep’s clothing, there were many ideas and edits. In the picture below, you can kind of see how one leg is different than the other. There’s a bandaid on Bo’s shoulder. 

How could they portray Bo Peep as athletic and feminine? 

Well, they nailed it.

Why Bo Peep is Important to My Girls

And then the tears came. As they usually do when talking about female roles in movies. When they said they wanted to portray Bo as athletic and feminine, immediately my eyes started to water. I didn’t ask any additional questions aside from wanting to know how the movie ended. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get it out.

My 5 girls all play sports, and they all love to be feminine. Sometimes I feel like they’re forced to choose a side. But why? Why can’t our girls be caring and tough? Why can’t they be superheroes and wear lace? They can. And if they’re not athletic, cool. And if they’re not feminine, cool. 

After the presentation, I said thank to each of the presenters and told them how much this new Bo meant to me. And then I cried. Yeah, a bit embarrassing, but heartfelt. 

I’m thankful Pixar chose to tell Bo Peep’s story, because seriously, I was worried about you, Bo! I didn’t know what happened to her in Toy Story 3. And I don’t know how her or Woody’s story will end? I guess we’ll see on June 21st!
