Wondering if Upgraded is ok for kids? This romantic comedy for Prime Video works due to the chemistry between its leads. Although it’s rated R, Upgraded is not too raunchy and is appropriate for some teens. Here’s what parents need to know in this Parents Guide to Upgraded.
Upgraded Parents Guide
Ana (Camila Mendes) is an ambitious intern dreaming of a career in the art world while trying to impress her demanding boss Claire (Marisa Tomei). She gets the chance of a lifetime to fly to London with Claire for a work trip. When she’s upgraded to first class on her flight, she meets handsome Will (Archie Renaux), who mistakes Ana for her boss- a little white lie that sets off a glamorous chain of events, romance and opportunity, until the white lie snowballs and she’s about to get caught.
Parents need to know that Upgraded has some sexual content and mature language.
Age Rating: Why is Upgraded Rated R?
Upgraded is Rated R for language and mature content which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 17 years old.
Language
The language is what really gives Upgraded its R rating. You can expect to hear many uses of f*ck, sh*t, bi*ch, and uses of Deity like g-ddamn and Jesus Christ.
Mature Content
There is no nudity in Upgraded but there are references to sex. There is some passionate kissing, but nothing too risqué. Some sexual jokes are made when a character comments “she’s implying we suck a lot of…” and the phrase isn’t finished.
Some paintings have nude figures and a character is seen painting someone in the nude, though all major private parts are covered.
Characters drink alcohol.
Is Upgraded Appropriate for Kids Under 16?
Teens will want to watch Upgraded since Camila Mendes (Riverdale) and Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone) star in some popular TV series. Parents need to watch for language the most in Upgraded, since there are many uses and variations of the f-word. Sexual content is not bad for a rated R movie, and I appreciate that there was no gratuitous nudity.
Upgraded is perfect for Valentine’s Day fun with an adorable meet-cute on an airplane. Points for some female solidarity in the film, but the messaging on life lessons and honesty get a little muddy. Then ending is rushed and really needed to flesh out the romance a bit more to make it a true rom-com.
However, in the scenes where Mendes and Renaux are together, they make a believable match.
Marisa Tomei is a mix of The Devil Wears Prada and Sylvie in Emily in Paris. She’s no-nonsense and has had to work her butt off in the industry. She sees potential in Ana, but also feels like something is off.
Upgraded starts off really well and unfortunately fizzles out some by the end. It’s funny, cute, and still reaches business class status.
