Here’s what parents need to know in The Witches Parents Guide.

The Witches 2020 Parent Movie Review

Is The Witches Remake Kid Friendly?

The Witches is based off of Roald Dahl’s children’s book, but the 2020 remake is different from the book and The Witches movie made in 1990 starring Anjelica Huston that was more frightening.

In late 1967, a young orphaned boy goes to live with his grandma in Demopolis located in Alabama. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some witches, she whisks him away to a seaside resort to escape them. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe — under cover — to carry out her nefarious plans to squish all the children.

Here’s what parents need to know.

Language

There isn’t any profanity. Sometimes Anne Hathaway’s accent can make “pathetic witches” can sound like “b-tches.” There’s also phrases like “scared the crap out of me.” Also phrases like “Jesus” and “Oh Lord” are used.

Scary Content

Scary witches try to intimidate children.

The Witches remove their wigs and reveal bald head withs different growths and feet with one middle toe that looks like it’s flipping you the bird. There is a lot of talk of witches being everywhere and wanting to squish children and how much they hate kids.

The Witches turn kids into mice and chickens. One witch looks into a mirror and reveals a skull. Another boy thrashes around before he’s turned into a mouse.

Also, a boy loses his parents in a car accident and he’s shown being pulled out of the car. This may be a hard scene for kids to watch.

Is The Witches Appropriate for Kids Under 10?

If your kids are scared of witches in general, skip this. However, if your kids like a little creepy and scary, this is a good Halloween movie to start with.

The Witches 2020 is appropriate for kids 10 and older as long as they’re ok with some CGI fright. Anne Hathaway’s character can be over-the-top, and sometimes it’s too much. The overall story is a little jacked up for children, but Octavia Spencer always makes everything better.

The Witches remake is more kid-friendly than the 1990 version, so start with this one for some spooktacular frights.

Really more kid friendly than the original I think not! My Daughter age 9 is generally OK with slightly scary films she loves the original but this one's CGI effects border on actual horror it made her cry and we had to turn it off this is the first time a film has made her react this way I am disgusted that it was given a PG!
