The Sleepover on Netflix has a bit of an identity crisis, but it’s a whole lot of fun for the family. Is The Sleepover ok for kids? Rated TV-PG, The Sleepover on Netflix is kid friendly for most ages. It’s a family-friendly action movie that serves its purpose to entertain all ages. In The Sleepover Parents Guide, here’s what parents need to know about the violence and language and that really gross vomit scene.
Is The Sleepover Kid Friendly?
Not to be confused with Sleepover, a 2004 teen comedy, The Sleepover is a comedy/heist/action film all in one. My kids immediately recognized the kids from some of their favorite shows like Disney’s Bizaardvark and Kim Possible.
The Finch Family seem to live a typical middle-class life in Cape Cod with Pastry Chef dad Ron (Ken Marino), Lunch Room mom Margot (Malin Ackerman), cellist teen Clancy (Sadie Stanley) and story-telling middle-schooler Kevin (Maxwell Simkins). At first it seems like the worst things the kids have to worry about are being the only kids without phones or an unintended viral video of Kevin dancing.
However, one night, the parents are kidnapped, and the kids learn their mom used to have another life as a jewelry thief. The kids along with friends Mim (Cree Cichhino) and Lewis (Lucas Jaye) go on an adventure to save the Finches and stumble upon more secrets. Meanwhile Ron learns that his wife had a very attractive fiancé that she must now team up with to get them out of a potentially deadly situation.
Language
While no traditional profanity, The Sleepover does have some bathroom talk like poop, pee, turd, and phrases like sugar balls (though in the baking sense) and perv. There are also a lot of uses of “Oh my g-d.”
Mature Content
Is The Sleepover kid friendly? There is some violence, but nothing too graphic – some fighting scenes and a gun is shown but is not used to shoot anyone. There are also threats of killing people.
The kids are in peril in some scenes and can be a little scary for little ones. One character mentions first base and a boob on the back, and there are a couple of kisses. There is also one graphic vomit scene that’s kinda gross. You may want to look away for a second.
Is The Sleepover Appropriate for Kids Under 8?
The Sleepover on Netflix has it all – action, adventure, humor, silliness, heartwarming lessons, and a delightful cast. Sometimes it can be disjointed, but it’s certainly not the identity crisis My Spy went through.
One of the first scenes is an epic dance scene by Maxwell Simkins that surely would give Napoleon Dynamite a run for his money. Also, it’s no secret that I’m a huge Veronica Mars fan, and Ken Marino’s rendition of Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? in The Sleepover rivaled his cover of Private Eyes as Vinnie Van Lowe. Some of my kids are a little too young for Veronica Mars, so it made me smile when I heard my 8-year-old chuckle and look at me to say, “Mom, this guy’s funny.”
I’d say The Sleepover is appropriate for kids 6 and older. It has all the ingredients for a family movie night, and it just lets kids be kids thrown in with some absurdity and goofiness. So often people are looking for provocative entertainment for our children that causes them to grow up too quickly.
And while it may seem silly to applaud the mom who used to be a thief, she reminds us that it was wrong, and that we can learn from our mistakes. The Sleepover never crosses the line for a family friendly movie, which is rare these days.
The Sleepover is a film we’ve been missing in the family movie genre – one that spans the ages from elementary-school kids to adults and one that even my teens will quote. When I hear laughter from all of my kids, I know a movie is a success, and The Sleepover is a success!
