My Marvel love is no surprise, and I was super excited when they announced DOCTOR STRANGE. Out of all the Marvel Universe Characters, I am the least familiar with Doctor Strange’s story. I imagine this to be the case for most children, too, unless they are die-hard comic book fans. As usual with my movie reviews, I answer the question, is DOCTOR STRANGE kid friendly? You know, from a mom’s point of view.
Is Doctor Strange ok for kids?
The Avengers, Thor, and Guardians of the Galaxy do touch on the cosmic realm of worlds. Doctor Strange deals more with the Supernatural and mystic powers. I wanted to preview this film before I let my children watch it. Friends who had already seen it before said it was so good, it was worth me losing sleep and going to a late show on a weekday. Well then Game 7 of the World Series happened, and y’all know how mind-blowing that was…and how late it went. My tired self went to see Doctor Strange, splurged for the 3D IMAX, and had my mind blown again! Suddenly, I wasn’t tired anymore.

Is Doctor Strange Kid Friendly?
Language in Doctor Strange – So compared to the rest of the Marvel/Avengers movies, swear words were on the low side. I counted 4 or 5. I was proud of these super heroes. Captain America wasn’t even there to remind them about their language.
Sexual Content in Doctor Strange – There was very minimal sexual content. There was a kiss on the cheek and a reference to “sleeping together.”
Violence in Doctor Strange – There is violence. It’s a Marvel movie after all! However, it’s not shoot ’em up violence. Think powers and magic. The opening scene is a bit intense. My sensitive 8-year-old would not have liked it.
Mature Content – The storyline is a bit more mature than your typical Avengers movie. It’s a bit complex, but the story and movie are so cool, that kids will be focused on all of that. There were children probably from ages 8 to 12 in the theater, and they were all talking excitedly about the film with their parents as we were walking out.
My children are ages 12, 9, 8, 6, and 4. They have seen different Marvel movies, mostly the Captain America movies, the Avengers, and Ant-Man. I would let my two oldest watch Doctor Strange, and even though my 8-year-old is a huge Captain America fan, she’s sensitive. Since I previewed it, I could cover her eyes during the parts I know would bother her.
Should You Watch Doctor Strange With Kids?
Like I mentioned earlier, I paid the extra dollars for Doctor Strange in 3D, and I did not regret it! I mean Finding Dory is cute in 3D, but Doctor Strange in 3D is art! It’s almost necessary. The visual effects are one of the very best things about this film. It’s almost Matrix-like. I was in awe, and it’s beautiful. Don’t underestimate the journey you’ll go on with Doctor Strange.
I can’t think of a better actor for this role than Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s witty, funny, and just enough of a jerk to put you in the quandary of loving or hating him. I need humor in my Marvel films, and this one delivered. Tilda Swinton is just genius. Always is. Doctor Strange is mostly kid friendly, but it may be a little hard for younger children to follow.
Put Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE in your ‘must-see in the theater’ column. It’s one of the coolest films of 2016 and is now playing in theaters! And as usual stay in your seat until after the credits for some more Marvel love.
