Lilo & Stitch is a heartwarming film for the whole family. Disney’s newest live-action remake is one of their best. Disney presents a reimagined Lilo & Stitch with Maia Kealoha starring as Lilo and Sydney Agudong as big sister Nani. When their parents pass away from a car accident, Nani tries to take care of Lilo on her own but is struggling to make ends meet and has to work, often leaving Lilo to fend for herself. When Lilo wishes on a star for a friend, as other kids her age make fun of and bully her, Stitch, an alien from another planet, drops in unexpectedly. Lilo adopts Stitch as a dog, but soon finds he’s much more than she bargained for.

Parents need to know that Lilo & Stitch does have scary and emotional scenes that may be too much for young children.

Lilo & Stitch does not have profanity but does have a use of hell, oh my g-d, and words like butt, fart, and stupid.
Violence: Is Lilo & Stitch Too Scary for Kids?
Parents should know that Lilo & Stitch does have dark themes and tones. The opening scene can be scary for Stitch when he is shown as an experiment for a mad scientist.
Young kids bully Lilo. Lilo pushes a girl off a stage. Characters are seen throwing up.
Lilo & Stitch are shown in peril. They are chased by characters from another planet. Stitch causes some destruction and havoc around town. Weapons like sci-fi blasters are used. A house is destroyed and shown on fire. Characters are shown almost drowning.
Is Lilo & Stitch Appropriate for Kids Under 8?
You can expect some mature themes of grief, loss, and sacrifice as well scary scenes involving a menacing alien. To sum it up, Lilo & Stitch is kid friendly for kids ages 8 and older. Younger Stitch fans may want to watch due to the animated film. The original also has many of the same themes, some scenes just may seem more real as it’s live action.
Lilo & Stitch is one of the better remakes from Disney. Maia Kealoha truly embraces the spirit of Lilo and allows you to connect to her character. Some of the humor and jokes didn’t land for me, but kids will enjoy Stitch’s hijinks. The emotional beats are where Lilo & Stitch shines.
While some may not agree with the changes to the ending, I was happy to see something different. You can see Nani’s struggle more, as one would, having to grieve parents and be a mother to a young sister. As the mother of 5 girls, should anything happen to my husband and I, I would want my adult daughter to continue to follow her dreams. And I would hope others close to our family would step in to make sure our daughters were taken care of. Stitch can be annoying at times, but he helps mend a family who needs some TLC, while learning lessons of his own. Friendships come in all shapes and sizes.
Lilo & Stitch is the family film for the summer. Ohana means family and family doesn’t mean blood only.
