Freakier Friday is back with even more body switches than Freaky Friday. And that just may be the problem. However, if you’re looking for some family fun, then Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan deliver. Is Freakier Friday kid friendly? Here’s what parents need to know.
Freakier Friday Parents Guide
In this sequel to Freaky Friday, Anna (Lindsay Lohan) is a busy single mom to sometimes moody teenager, Harper (Julia Butters). Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), is now a successful psychologist about to go out on a book tour. Harper and her nemesis, Lily (Sophia Hammons) have an incident at school, and during a parent meeting, Anna meets Eric (Manny Jacinto), Lily’s dad. It’s love at first sight and the couple get engaged much to the chagrin of their daughters.
It seems as if this blended family can’t get along and at Anna’s bachleorette party, Anna, Tess, Harper, and Lily meet a fortune teller and wake up in each other’s bodies. It’s a four-body switch with Anna and Tess as teenagers and Harper and Lily as the adults trying to break up their parents for good.
Freakier Friday Age Rating
Freakier Friday is rated PG for language, rude humor, and thematic elements which means some content may not be suitable for kids. Parental guidance suggested.
Parents need to know that there is some mature and sarcastic humor as well some profanity in Freakier Friday.
Language
There is some language including a use of a**, damn, and words of Deity.
Mature Content
There is no nudity in Freakier Friday, but there is some kissing. A younger man flirts with a much older woman. A female tries to pose in a sexy way while trying to get a man to fall in love with her. This is all for comedic purposes.
There is some alcohol consumption.
When the younger girls switch bodies with the older women, some ageist and unflattering comments and jokes are made about wrinkly skin and appearance. An older woman is shown shopping for adult diapers, enemas, and other “senior care” supplies.
Is Freakier Friday Appropriate for Kids Under 12?
Due to some mature humor, Freakier Friday is kid friendly for kids ages 10 and older. However, some jokes may go over younger kids’ heads. Not necessarily a movie for the whole family, this is a good one for teens and mothers/daughters.
Freakier Friday hits on the heartfelt and emotional moments. While there are definitely fun scenes, the confusion involving a four-body switch is too much. Sometimes I would forget who switched with whom. The pacing is slow and the film is too long at almost 2 hours. Some scenes were unnecessary for plot or character development. You could essentially leave at any part of the film to run to the bathroom and be fine.
Some of the gags were over the top, and the comedic chaos didn’t work in spots. It’s unfortunate that the script was lacking in cohesion, because the talent is there. Lohan and Curtis still have that mother-daughter chemistry and slipped right back into their characters from years ago. Butters was also a stand-out, providing a lot of maturity to her role. Manny Jacinto deserves to be a much bigger star than he is, and Chad Michael Murray is delightful.
This cast is outstanding and did not need some of the easy laughs. They are far too witty.
Nostalgia runs deep and the nods to Freaky Friday and other Lohan movies are well thought out. Freakier Friday is a mixed bag and may be better suited for streaming than the big screen. Although the four-way body switch creates too much chaos and confusion, Freakier Friday is still a lot of fun at the movies. The sincere emotional moments make up for some of the lazy comedy.
