American Underdog Parents Guide

American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a stockboy at a grocery store (after playing college ball) to a Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame quarterback. This film is less sports drama, more story based on the challenges and setbacks Kurt faced while trying to make it to the NFL. He just loved football. Kurt is also an overall nice guy shown by the respect he gets from teammates, walking 3 miles just to get Brenda’s (Anna Paquin) number, and immediately loving her children when he first meets them.

After not being drafted by the NFL, Warner took a job at a grocery store stocking shelves just to make ends meet, while also living with his girlfriend, Brenda, her parents, and her two children. Through support from Brenda, family, friends, teammates, and coaches, Warner also uses determination and faith to make his dreams come true.

Is American Underdog Appropriate for Kids Under 12?

American Underdog is a feel-good story that gives people hope. We may already know how the story ends, but getting to know Kurt Warner better, and the characteristics he exemplified to accomplish his dreams is what inspires others to chase their dreams, too. There is no content inappropriate for children, but sometimes the movie can be a little slow and is a little long.

Sometimes Christian filmmakers, Directors Jon and Andrew Erwin (I Still Believe) can force the talk of God a little too much in their movies instead of weaving it in naturally, but I also applaud them for making films in this genre. We need more of them.

Zachary Levi nails some of Warner’s mannerisms and does a fantastic job showing just what type of human being perseveres and never gives up. Warner has a pretty remarkable story. American Underdog is a story where nice guys don’t finish last. One that gives people hope that the impossible is possible.
