Is Valley Girl Kid Friendly?

There’s a new totally rad movie to stream -Valley Girl! However is this 2020 Valley Girl remake kid friendly? It’s rated PG-13 for language, suggestive material, teen partying, and brief nudity. I’ll get into more details on those in this Valley Girl Parent Guide, but overall, Valley Girl is cheesy fun in musical form.

Valley Girl is the remake of the 1983 original. However, plot twist, this is a musical, the kind where people break out into song for no reason. And I am here for it.

It still takes place in the 1980s and Julie, a teenager from San Fernando Valley, aka as a Valley Girl, meets Jacob, a punk rocker from the city, and they instantly have a connection. However, their friends don’t approve. Will she sacrifice it all for him?

Valley Girl is rated PG-13, and it earns its rating. Most of it is in line with other PG-13 movies, except for 5 bare behinds, yes 5.

Language

There is like bad language that is totally cringey like several uses of bitchin’, a–hole, douchebag, pissed, sh–, and many uses of “oh my G-d,” and damn. Other words like skank, dyke and dick are used a couple of times.

Violence

Two characters get in a fight and start punching each other.

Mature Content

There is brief nudity in which 5 characters drop their pants and show their bare butts with letters written on them. Underage drinking, partying, and lots of kissing is shown. Sex is implied, but there is nothing more than kissing on screen. Also be aware of some teens living without parents and issues of abandonment.

Is Valley Girl Appropriate For Teens?

I die over the clothes, costuming, and dance numbers in Valley Girl. And the soundtrack is outstanding! Sure, there are plenty of cliches and kitschy performances, but with some of the Netflix teen content out there, I’d take this any day.

I’d recommend Valley Girl for kids ages 13 and up. If you’re worried about some mature content, then I’d go a little older. Tweens might want to watch for Logan Paul, a YouTube star who has had controversial content in the past. This is why this film has been shelved for the last couple of years.

I’m also down for the Princess Bride style narration from Alicia Silverstone as she relays her Valley Girl days to her daughter. It’s relatable, and reminiscent.

I’m not watching Valley Girl for deep meanings and unpredictability. I’m watching for some recognizable favorite actors, 80s tunes, and life lessons thrown in for good measure. Don’t overthink this one.

During this period at home, sometimes I just want some fluff that’s going to make me happy, and Valley Girl is the collar popping and leg warmer fluff I want right now.
