Wendell & Wild Parents Guide

From the delightfully wicked minds of Henry Selick and Jordan Peele, comes Wendell & Wild, an animated tale about scheming demon brothers Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Peele) who enlist the help of 13-year-old Kat Elliot(Lyric Ross) to summon them to the Land of the Living.

Kat is dealing with some serious guilt about the death of her parents, and her behavior gets her sent to a girls school. What Kat demands in return from Wendell and Wild leads to a bizarre and comedic adventure, an animated fantasy that defies the law of life and death, all told through the handmade artistry of stop motion.

Wendell & Wild Age Rating

Wendell & Wild is rated PG-13 for some thematic material, violence, substance use and brief strong language which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 13.

Is Wendell & Wild Too Scary For Kids?

Wendell & Wild does have scary imagery and dark themes with violence which may be too much for younger kids to handle.

Language

Language includes words like a**, damn, hell, bloody, and insults like stupid, idiot, and blowhard.

Mature Content

Wendell & Wild does have dark themes and violence throughout like ghosts, demons, and death. Characters are murdered, electrocuted, and parents are seen drowning. Topics of grief and loss could be a trigger for some children.

There is also some scary and gross imagery like use of bodily fluids. Topics about the underworld and hell are seen and discussed.

Some characters act like they’re drunk.

Is Wendell & Wild Appropriate for Kids Under 13?

In Wendell & Wild you can expect to see a little blood, some violent scenes, murder, and profanity used by some of the characters. To sum it up, Wendell & Wild is not kid-friendly for younger kids.

I’d recommend Wendell & Wild for tweens and teens who are ok with the mature content, especially about death. This tale is definitely bizarre, but told in a unique way to explore trauma and grief, which are great topics to discuss as a family.

Henry Selick also directed Coraline, so he has a particular style. Wendell & Wild is stunning visually, but if you’re looking for a Disney movie, this isn’t it. Wendell & Wild will not appeal to all the audiences, but if you want an edgy, dark humor-filled film for Halloween, add it to your list.
