There is some romance with talk of Mario being in love with Princess Peach and asking her on a date. There are also themes of abandonment, loneliness, and family.

Violence/Scary Content

There is quite a bit of violence in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie including fights with hand-to-hand combat, use of weapons lives knives, bombs, hammers, and fire. Globs turn into monsters and dragons. Characters are shown hurt and in peril with others wanting to kill other characters. Characters are kidnapped and children are shown crying and sad. One particular scene shows a parental death which could be a trigger for some viewers. It’s not as traumatic as Mufasa, but I was taken aback a bit when it happened.

Is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Appropriate for Kids Under 8?

You can expect video game violence, some dark themes, and a little romance. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is kid friendly for kids ages 8 and older. Younger kids can watch, too, but they may get scared by some of the content. If they are Nintendo fans and Super Mario Bros fans, then they’ll love all the old and new characters on screen.

Most of the time the film was a frenzy of characters visiting different sets and locations. Jumping from one scene to the next, there was no cohesion in the story which had me wondering what was the point? But you are immersed in an incredible video game world brimming with nostalgia and memories. Bringing in graphics from the 8-bit Super Mario Bros game and intermixing it with the movie, plus the addition of game sounds was so cool. It made me want to go home and play my old Nintendo that’s been collecting dust.

Sometimes you go to the movies for a good time, and that’s what The Super Mario Galaxy Movie can offer a lot of families and kids. Some adults may suffer, but only for about 98 minutes.
