Marvel welcomes another female character to the MCU and we are here for it – She-Hulk! We’ve seen a surge of popularity of female-led movies and shows like Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, WandaVision, and now She-Hulk. However, what makes She-Hulk different than the rest of them?
Kat Coiro , Director and Executive Producer of Episodes 1-4 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law said, “I remember very vividly, being a little girl and seeing the cover of a She Hulk comic in amidst the sea of male comics. And just not knowing who she was or what this was, but knowing that I was moved by it. The idea of being large and in charge and, you know, taking control. Taking up space was something that really resonated with me.” This whole project has been a dream come true for her.
So what makes She-Hulk different than the rest of the female MCU heroes? Head Writer Jessica Gao says that the beauty of television allows them the time and space to sit with this character.
Jennifer Walters is an attorney and a person going about her life who accidentally receives powers because of her cousin Bruce (Hulk). She doesn’t really even want them, and wants to continue her day-to-day life. Gao said that because of Tatiana Maslany, Jen Walters “immediately, from day one” felt like a real human being.
And truly, that’s one of the best things about She-Hulk is that it’s written by women. So there are details in the show that make it relatable to so many, especially if you’re in your 30s trying to date. Gao adds, “this is a real person who actually feels things and processes things and, like most people, has highs and lows.” You can tell she has lived a life and has life experiences.
She-Hulk is a half-hour legal comedy, but it also has huge cinematic scope and elements of drama, action, and suspense. They do a great job breaking the fourth wall and giving audiences a peek behind the curtain into the mundane life of a superhero when they’re not saving the world. It makes it real.
