Wondering if House of the Dragon is ok for kids? Like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is not kid friendly…at all. This Game of Thrones prequel is even darker than its predecessor. Here’s what parents need to know in this House of the Dragon Parents Guide.
House of the Dragon Parents Guide
Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” House of the Dragon, is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. It follows the fights and conflicts within the family over the Iron Throne and nearly led to the destruction of their bloodline and dragons when King Viserys Targaryen decides to rename his heir.
Why is House of the Dragon Rated TV-MA?
House of the Dragon is rated TV-MA for violence, language, and nudity which means some content may not be suitable for children and is intended for mature audiences.
Language
There is a lot of profanity in House of the Dragon including uses of a**, f*ck, sh*t, bi*ch, bastard, c*nt, and words of Deity.
Mature Content
The show contains storylines of incest. There are sexual scenes involving nudity, front and back. Graphic scenes of childbirth including slicing open a character with blood everywhere. It’s pretty horrific.
House of the Dragon is full of extreme, gratuitous violence. A character orders knights to murder people in the streets. Characters are beheaded, castrated, and sexually assaulted. Body parts are ripped apart. Dragons could be scary for younger viewers.
Is House of the Dragon Appropriate for Kids Under 16?
You can expect to see some sex scenes, sexual violence, nudity, sexual content, graphic violence, blood and gore, intense violent scenes, alcohol and drug use, and profanity used by some of the characters. To sum it up, House of the Dragon is not kid-friendly.
If your teens have seen Game of Thrones, then I guess they could probably handle House of the Dragon, but I do not recommend it for kids or teens and would save this one for adults only. House of the Dragon is even darker than Game of Thrones with seemingly nobody to root for. There are too many mature themes and topics that some kids cannot handle. Nor they should have to.
As always, parents if you have reservations or questions about whether House of the Dragon is ok for your kids, then I recommend screening it ahead of time.
