In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how horrible. After centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. He just has to figure out how to end his codependency.

Language in Renfield

There is profanity including uses of sh*t, a**, a**hole, bit*h, f*ck, damn, crude sexual words, and words of Deity like g-d and g-ddamn.

Violence: Is Renfield Too Scary for Kids?

With a lot of violence, blood, gore, scary vampires, and jump scares, Renfield is not kid friendly. Some of the violence can be campy and cheesy, it’s also incredibly gross. Expect scenes where limbs are ripped off, heads are decapitated, Dracula biting people, brutal killings, shootings, stabbings, and horror scenes. A man explodes. You can see internal body organs coming out of victims.

Is Renfield Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

In Renfield you can expect a lot of blood, guts, killings, graphic violence, and profanity used by some characters. To sum it up, Renfield is not kid friendly for kids under 16 years old.

Lately we’ve seen horror films that also try to be comedies. I would put Renfield in that category, which may appeal to a broader audience, but may also do a disservice to horror fans. Dracula’s assistant, Renfield, has traditionally been known as a lunatic. How else do you describe someone who is so devout to an equally horrible being?

Holt does an excellent job of making one feel empathetic to Renfield. But in making Cage’s Dracula so exaggerated, it sometimes takes away from the sadism and intrigue. The two of them together work, but when they are separate, things fall apart.

If you haven’t grown weary of the funny, bloodthirsty and violent horror films as of late, then add Renfield to the list.
