Parents Guide to SENIOR YEAR on Netflix – Is it Kid Friendly?

Wondering if SENIOR YEAR on Netflix is ok for kids? This new rom-com on Netflix is pretty raunchy and is another high school-wannabe-popular film, but let me learn a lesson by the end. Senior Year is rated R and is not recommended for kids. Here’s what parents need to know in this Senior Year Parents Guide on Netflix.

SENIOR YEAR Parents Guide on Netflix

Stephanie Conway is a high-school cheerleader who has clawed her way to the top of the social ladder. Once she gets prom queen, her life will be perfect and she can live her dream life with her boyfriend Blaine. However, after an accident, she falls into a coma before her prom. Twenty years later, Stephanie (Rebel Wilson) awakens and finds that everyone has moved on with their lives, including her high school nemesis who has stolen her perfect life. Stephanie returns to high school to reclaim her status and become prom queen, except, you know, she’s 37 years old.

Why is Senior Year Rated R?

Senior Year is rated R for Brief Teen Drinking/Drug Use, Sexual Material, and Language which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 17.

Parents need to know there is quite a bit of sexual content in Senior Year, though there is no nudity.

Is the Language in Senior Year Kid Friendly?

There is a lot of profanity in Senior Year including uses of sh*t, a**, bi*ch, damn, and a lot of uses of f*ck. There is also a lot of sexual language including dong, dickbag, sluts, hoes, and a use of retarded.

Sexual Content in Senior Year

There is no nudity on Senior Year, but there are a lot of sexual references including conversations about teens boning, losing their virginity, blow jobs, etc.

There are also scenes of provocative dance numbers where dancers are grinding on each other, licking their fingers and rubbing it down their bodies, nipple rubbing, etc.

In one scene a boy grabs a girl’s breasts without permission. A woman slaps a man’s behind. An entire dance number revolves around consent.

Mature Content

There are topics of sexual consent, death of a parent, and bullying.

Is Senior Year Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

Senior Year is one of those raunchy teen comedies that probably should not be watched by tweens, but will make its way around school. The film could have easily been made into a PG-13 film, because the raunchy sex jokes are not what makes the film funny. In fact, it is one of its downfalls.

Rebel Wilson is a funny actress and her comedic physicality is one of her strengths, but the script did not do her justice. A fish out of water in high school 20 years later had promise, but the ending is rushed and some characters don’t get the stories they deserve.

Some of the film has a Never Been Kissed type of feel but it just doesn’t quite connect the way it’s supposed to. The lessons are important, and I’m not mad about what it’s trying to teach, but less sexual innuendos and better writing could have made it a very good film. It’s Netflix, it’s semi-funny, and entertaining enough for a Friday night.
