MY SPY stars Dave Bautista, who plays JJ a CIA operative who in on his last chance before being fired. His cover has been blown by a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover to watch her family. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.

Language

There is quite a bit of language in My Spy, especially for a movie that markets itself towards families, but it’s on par for a PG-13 movie. There were at least 5 uses of a–, 4 uses of sh–, 3 uses of bit–, a bunch of hells, and uses of Jesus Christ, and OMG. A couple of crass words like dick and balls were also heard. Some of the words are said by the young actors. A character mouths what the f—, but never completes the sentence.

Mature Content

There is also quite a bit of violence for children in My Spy. There are a lot of guns, weapons, explosions, a knife fight, a stabbing, etc. Some of it is a little comical, but for kids sensitive to violence, it could be too much. Some characters are in peril and some die.

There is a budding romance between two characters and some of the moms swoon over JJ. There are also some stereotypes of gay neighbors.

Is My Spy Appropriate for Kids Under 12?

I would recommend My Spy for kids ages 12 and up. If language and some violence doesn’t bother you or your child, then younger kids could watch it. While there is mature content, some kids will like watching a spy-type movie that is not too adult-ish.

The female stars are who really stole the show. Chloe Coleman is a smart young lady with a lot of sass who keeps Bautista on his toes. Kristen Schall, plays Bobbi, JJ’s partner (she’s the tech, he’s the action) and her quips and dry humor had me laughing throughout the film.

Bautista is somewhat awkward in the leading man type role with Drax-like tendencies, but his leading ladies help make up for it. I didn’t hate it, and My Spy makes for an entertaining weekend family movie night.
