After watching Thor: Love and Thunder, my list of what movies to watch ahead of time has changed. Thor: Love and Thunder could honestly be a stand-alone film, and you’d be fine not watching any movies to prepare for it if you’re a casual Marvel fan. However, if you want some backstory before you go into it, these are the most important movies to watch before Thor: Love and Thunder.
List of Movies to Watch Before Thor: Love and Thunder
Phase 4 of the MCU has brought some great Marvel films and some not-so-great films. If you’ve watched all the Marvel movies in order, then you’ve been there, done that. However, if you just want some general knowledge of the characters in Thor 4, then here’s a list of what you should watch before watching Thor: Love and Thunder.
Thor
Well, Thor should be your first watch so you get to know where Thor comes from and who he is as a character. Plus you’ll get introduced to Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest.
The Avengers
I recommend The Avengers if you’re not familiar with Marvel movies at all, because then when you watch Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame you won’t be so hella confused.
Thor: Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok is a must-see before Thor 4, because you’ll meet Valkyrie and Korg, two essential characters in Thor: Love and Thunder. Plus, it’s the first time we’ve seen a Marvel movie with so much comedy and you’ll see Taika Waititi’s directing style in action. It’ll prepare you for the bizarre and quirky humor in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Avengers: Infinity War
So if you’ve made it to the 4th movie on the list, get the tissues ready. Infinity War is a prelude to the emotional events of Avengers: Endgame and to Marvel Phase 4.
Avengers: Endgame
Freaking Thanos. If you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, then you have to see the conclusion in Avengers: Endgame. Thor is also going through something which sets up the events in Thor: Love and Thunder and Thor’s journey picks up from there.
Even though the Guardians of the Galaxy are in the film, they’re only in it for a hot second, so you should be fine with watching Infinity War and Endgame.
You’ve got this! If you haven’t seen a whole lot of Marvel films and want to prepare yourself for Thor 4, then these 5 movies will do it. If you really have no time, then watch Thor: Ragnarok and call it a day. You won’t want to miss the comedy in Thor: Love and Thunder.
