Minions: The Rise of Gru takes us back to the 1970s, where, Gru (Steve Carell) is a schoolboy with a penchant for evil that his classmates don’t understand.  He’s a fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, and when they have an opening after kicking out one of its members, Gru submits his application. However, when some of the members get a look at him, they laugh and kick him out of the building.

To prove his worth, Gru steals a powerful necklace from the Vicious 6, and now they’re after him. Gru and his minions are on the run, and together, Gru, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto, turn to an unlikely source for guidance and help, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Violence

There is quite a bit of animated violence in The Rise of Gru such as slapping characters, blowing things up, fighting with weapons, arson, hand-to-hand combat, martial arts, and scary creatures trying to kill others. Some of it is used for comedic purposes, and while not terribly frightening, some kids may think it’s ok to imitate some of the actions at home.

Mature Content

There are some naked animated butts like half of Gru’s butt when he was in a kid and him in his underwear. You also get a couple of minion butt shots.

Also be aware of farts, potty humor, and a chicken pooping out eggs to attack a character.

Is Minions: The Rise of Gru Appropriate for Kids Under 8?

Is Minions: The Rise of Gru kid friendly? With plenty of gags and funny minion antics, The Rise of Gru will be a crowd pleaser for many kids. They know their audience, and this film is a definite 10 steps up from the Minions movie.

Gru’s origin story brings a purpose to tame the minions in a sense. Sure they are still chaotic and speak random gibberish, but Gru needs them, and they need Gru, especially to make the movie work.

The animation is bright and crisp, really bringing the minions to life. As they find themselves in and out of trouble, you can’t help but laugh at their hijinks, especially when they give you the big, wide eyes. Kids just love them.

Parents, you can expect some rude behavior and language, potty humor, and some animated violence, which is not appropriate for all ages, but overall, Minions: The Rise of Gru is a fun, family friendly film for the summer.
