How Hailee Steinfeld Handles Playing Different Marvel Characters

We’re lucky enough to get Hailee Steinfeld in a new Marvel role as Kate Bishop in Marvel’s Hawkeye series on Disney+. As a seasoned actor playing roles in Blockbusters such as Bumblebee, she’s not exactly new to Marvel. She was also the voice of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

Hailee Steinfeld’s Two Marvel Roles

Kate Bishop comes from a wealthy family and doesn’t exactly fit in to her mom’s lifestyle. She is an excellent archer and when she accidentally takes Hawkeye’s old Ronin suit, the two are paired to help get rid of some old enemies. In the Hawkeye Press Junket, Steinfeld was asked about her experience as one of the few actors to play different Marvel characters and what’s that like.

Steinfeld replied that it’s incredibly cool and she felt honored to be a part of both projects.  While the characters have similarities, but they’re also very different and pointed out one is animation and the other is not.

She also says, “I always love that I do find the characters that I have played in the past do have this sort of consistency in being these young women who are strong-minded, have a point of view, have an idea of who they are in this world. And they really stop at nothing to get  they want to achieve what they want to achieve. And I think that both Gwen Stacy and Kate Bishop are proof that if you set your mind to something, you can really achieve great things.”

And we love to see it. Marvel has been adding more and more female heroes and characters, which I appreciate. Because for years, my 5 daughters had few Halloween costumes to choose from. Now we’re going to see an influx of Kate Bishop Halloween costumes next year, because she’s such a relatable and awesome character, as well as role model for girls.

Plus she’s getting some Clint Barton mentorship. Kevin Feige said that Hawkeye is this reluctant hero. This reluctant mentor under the surface. And we see that come out more in Hawkeye.

Feige mentions one of his favorite scenes in all of the Marvel movies is “with Clint and Wanda in Sokovia, when he basically says, “you go out that door, you’re an Avenger” and motivates her to join the fight.” And that was the kernel of of how they could connect their MCU incarnation of Clint Barton into the Matt Fraction storyline and the relationship with Kate Bishop.

Hawkeye is now streaming on Disney+ with new episodes airing on Wednesdays!
