Downton Abbey: A New Era Parents Guide

Downton Abbey: A New Era takes us to 1928, when a modern world is coming to Downton in the form of motion pictures. While some of the family ventures to the South of France to uncover the mystery of a villa being gifted to the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), others stay back to supervise and host the filming of a silent film turned talkie at Downtown Abbey. With that comes movie stars, excitement, drama, and even some scoff from Violet Crawley. Could it really be a Downton show or movie without her sharp wit and tongue?

Downton Abbey: A New Era Review

Downton Abbey: A New Era showcases what fans have loved about this series and family for so long – drama, heart, humor, and beautiful scenery and costumes. There are many subplots within A New Era, but they never felt messy.

Between Violet’s secret past boyfriend she never mentioned, Daisy’s (Sophie McShera) matchmaking of Mrs. Patmore, Barrow’s (Robert James-Collier) possible chance at happiness, and Carson’s stalwart watchful eye, it all tied the upstairs and downstairs together, with Mary (Michelle Dockery) getting ready to take charge.

All our favorite characters show vulnerability and emotion, trying hard to be strong amidst conflict. As this Downton family has matured, so has the love and respect between the family and the downstairs staff. United in keeping Downton afloat, this common goal links them.

Standouts include Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith. You just can’t imagine a Downton anything without Violet and her insults and love. And Robert Grantham has a lot to deal with in this film, but Bonneville always seems to perform with each new opposition thrown at him.

I did not like, however, how they addressed Mary’s husband’s absence (Matthew Goode). His schedule prohibited from filming A New Era, so he was just absent. That storyline did not fit his character, and I did stew about it for a bit. But film director, Jack, came in ready to sweep Mary off her feet. Isn’t is always flattering to be wanted? Alas it was what it was, but can my girl Mary catch a break??

Even Edith was in on the action as she started writing again. And when asked how she was going to manage working and raising children, she honestly answered with good nannies, aware of her privilege.

The costuming was on point as usual, especially the dress in the South of France, the movie stars, everything! The first film felt like fan service, this one feels like the storytelling we were accustomed to in the series.

Downton Abbey: A New Era delights fans of the Crawley family with an exceptional next chapter as they come into modern times, always adapting with class and social commentary.
