The Boogeyman is Rated PG-13 by the MPAA for terror, violence, language, and teen drug use which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 13.

Language in The Boogeyman

There is some profanity including uses of bi*ch, sh*t, hell, one use of f*ck, and words of Deity like “Jesus” and g-ddamn.

Violence: Is The Boogeyman Too Scary for Kids?

The Boogeyman is quite scary and full of jump scares which I don’t recommend for younger kids.

There is a dark monster that attacks characters, including children. It sucks the life out of a character.

A teen is tied up and thrown against a wall.

A tooth is pulled out by a doorknob in a disgusting manner.

There are more instances of death, use of weapons, fire, and scare tactics.

Mature Content: Is The Boogeyman Ok for Kids?

A character dies by suicide.

Teens smoke pot.

Themes of grief, loss, and trauma are prevalent as families grieve the death of loved ones.

Is The Boogeyman Appropriate for Kids Under 13?

You can expect a lot of jump scares, some blood, and scary anticipation of the horrors that await. To sum it up, The Boogeyman is not kid friendly for kids under 13. Still a horror, it is mostly the suspense that scares the audience, more creepy than scary. Gore is not super high.

I wouldn’t recommend it for tweens or younger due to the themes of using trauma for horror.

However, if you’re looking for a film with a lot of build-up, shadows, and scares, then this will do the trick.
