After walking in a few minutes late to the interview with Deric McCabe, who plays Charles Wallace Murry in A Wrinkle in Time movie, he called me out. Told me I missed the pre-show. It was in that moment, I knew we’d be BFFs. It was solidified during the interview, too. Check out our rapid-fire Q&A with one of the stars of Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time.
Thank you, Disney, for inviting me to the #HanSoloEvent and providing travel and accommodations. All opinions on how much I have in common with a 9-year-old are my own.

Deric McCabe Interview Laughs
I’m not joking when I say Deric McCabe called me out. Apparently he put on a pre-show before I arrived, and I certainly am sad I missed out.
The first thing I noticed was his energy and confidence. I have a 9-year-old girl at home, and there’s no way she could sit in front of a group of bloggers with that much self-assurance. Someone commented on his amazing personality, and he quips with a giant Hollywood smile, “Oh I know, right?”
As we started asking him questions, we raised our hands, and he points to one of us and yells, “YOU!” It was a continuos flow of questions and answers.
He told us about how Oprah ate his popcorn, his favorite scenes, and about his acting heroes.

Why Deric McCabe is My BFF
Yeah, so I have a lot in common with a child. He’s cool, and it all started with the Avengers.
How did you get into acting?
Deric:“This is going to sound really silly, but I was watching the Avengers with my dad and I just saw Scarlett Johansson [fight] and I was like oh, I want to do that and I’m going to meet her. So, then I was like, I think I want to do acting.”
I almost shed a tear during that moment, because me, too, buddy, me too. After he proclaimed his love for Scarlett Johansson, he also informed us of his crush on Chloe Bennet from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and how she was one of his acting heroes. See? Told you. Instant BFFs.
What was something you learned in making this movie?
Deric: “Oh, I learned the place where they keep their snacks. It’s called Krafty and it’s delicious.”
Dude. Snack info. Enough said.
Then he proceeded to tell us about how Oprah ate his popcorn.
Deric: “The first time I met Oprah they make this really good popcorn. They make butter on it and put some cheddar on it, and we were doing stunt practice for the cave. They set it [the popcorn] down on a mat, and then it wasn’t her turn yet. And she just started eating my popcorn. And she was like, whose popcorn is this? This is delicious. I’m like oh, that’s me. Oprah’s eating my popcorn.”
When sharing snacks, Oprah’s the only one that can get away with that. Yup, I feel ya, Deric.
Deric McCabe’s Advice for Young Actors
After telling us about the Oprah moment, someone asked if Oprah had given him any advice.
Did she give you any insights into your career?
Deric:“She did say, there’s more to come after the movie. And I’m there sobbing on the floor. No, there’s not. My life is over.”
I just busted out laughing, because I’d feel the same way. Pure drama. I love this kid.
However, then he became serious and had some really good advice for young kids who want to get started in acting.
Deric: “When you don’t get any jobs, keep the faith.”

As the mother of 5 girls, I love what Director Ava DuVernay has to say about a Wrinkle in Time. As fantastical as the film’s premise and imagery may seem, “A Wrinkle in Time” centers on a universal human need that feels particularly relevant and relatable today. “This is a story about belonging,” says DuVernay. “It’s about a girl who just doesn’t feel strong in her mind, body and spirit. But through this epic journey, she finds her strength and learns that the center of the universe starts inside her. It’s about Meg feeling like she belongs in the universe and has a mighty part to play… as do we all.”
