Is Spider-Man: Homecoming Kid-Friendly?

Usually I screen Marvel and action movies before I make the decision to allow my kids to see them. However we’re on vacation in Lake Powell, and I got a little sick. So some family went to sleep at the lake while me and two of my girls stayed at the hotel. In this small town, there is one movie screen that shows one movie for a week at a time. That movie happened to be Spider-Man: Homecoming. Yay for me!! Is Spider-Man: Homecoming kid-friendly? I took my chances and hoped it was okay for my 4-year-old and 8-year-old.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Synopsis

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.

I really enjoyed the casting of Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He was a geeky, over-eager kid, brimming with excitement at the chance to meet (and fight) with the Avengers! That’s the Spider-Man I know, not a confident man. So once again, Tom Holland was brilliant in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He was funny, teenager-ish, nerdy, lovable, and completely believable as Spider-Man.

We get his point of view of what was going on during Civil War, and it was hilarious. We also get a look at the consequences of these huge battles since Spider-Man: Homecoming shows the clean-up of the New York battle from the first Avengers movie. It really helps connect the stories.

So were my children scarred for life? No. They actually both really enjoyed it! In fact, it was my 4-year-old who voluntarily skipped the lake, so she could watch Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is what happens when you grow up with a Marvel Mama.

Spider-Man: Homecoming had no sexual content that I remember. There was one kiss and a little awkward teenage crushing. There is some language, no f-word that I remember, but I did leave once to take the girls to the bathroom during one of the fight scenes. Some of the words were hard to understand, but there are some s-words and a-words that are clearly heard. My 4-year-old like to repeat words she doesn’t know, so in one instance, she said sh***ing me? Like, what does that mean? Her sister told her it was a bad word and not to say it again. Then her eyes got wide and she continued to eat her popcorn. Mother of the year right here.

As far as violence is concerned, there are fight scenes. However, for me it didn’t feel very violent heavy where people were dying everywhere. It’s probably one of the least violent Marvel movies in my opinion and less violent than Star Wars movies. I would allow all my children to watch Spider-Man: Homecoming, because they are used to watching Marvel movies. I’d recommend it for ages 8 and up unless you don’t want your children hearing any bad words, then skip it.

For comparison sake, I did not allow any of my children (ages 4 to 12) to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because of the sexual content and jokes. Those kinds of bad words are worse for me than the 4-letter kinds.

Is it Worth It?

Overall, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a solid hit and fits into the Marvel Universe. Was it my favorite Marvel film? No. Captain America: Civil War is my current favorite. I like having more of the characters I love all together, plus the intro to Black Panther. The Iron Man fans will love Spider-Man: Homecoming; I’m just not a Tony Stark fan. For those of you who love his snarky, sarcastic demeanor, that Tony is definitely back. It was a tiny bit endearing to see a faux father-like figure in Tony with Peter Parker. But just a little tiny bit. I’m still side-eyeing you hard, Iron Man!

I was definitely pleased with the Captain America and Stan Lee cameos, and as always, stay for the credits. Spider-Man: Homecoming is worth seeing in the theaters and is pretty safe for kids that are Marvel and superhero fans.
