This is a Sandler Family affair with Adam Sandler’s two daughters and wife in the movie. They all do an excellent job, and the film is relatively family friendly, but it’s still Adam Sandler. So he likes to slide some inappropriate comments or jokes that some may not find funny. I am not familiar with the Jewish religion, but it did inspire me to learn more about it. I can’t speak to the actual representation, but I know some people were upset with some of the content.
Some of the film felt messy, but so is adolescence. Some of the themes were relatable, while others weren’t. It seemed like every kid who went to Hebrew School was rich with their bat mitzvah after parties. It was like watching MTV’s Sweet Sixteen show.
All in all, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is sweet, funny, with a hint of edginess that may not sit well with everyone.
