Is Last Night in Soho Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Wondering if Last Night in Soho is ok for kids and teens? Rated R for language, sexual content, and violence, Last Night in Soho is not kid-friendly. A 1960s horror film by Edgar Wright, it’s a little seedy with pimps and cigarettes. Here’s what parents need to know in this Last Night in Soho Parents Guide.

Last Night in Soho Parents Guide

Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), aka Ellie, is an aspiring fashion designer from Cornwall who moves to London to attend her dream design school. After moving out from her dorm when she is bullied by her roommate, she rents a room on the top floor of an old house and Ellie begins having dreams and is transported to the Soho of the 1960s.

She can see an aspiring singer named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy) in her dreams, and witnesses some horrible things done to Sandie by her manager, Jack. Ellie’s mental state is questionable, but are her dreams real or hallucinations?

What is Last Night in Soho Rated?

Last Night in Soho is rated R for bloody violence, sexual content, language, brief drug material and brief graphic nudity. This movie is not appropriate for kids under 17.

Language

There is a lot of language in Last Night in Soho including over 20 uses of fu*k, also uses of sh*t, bit*h, damn, and sexual language like cunt.

Mature Content

There is plenty of sexual content which can be disturbing or triggering to some girls including a character being pimped out to older men and forced to have sexual relations. There are also conversations about rape.

There are scenes with characters having sex and a scene of implied oral sex with no on-screen nudity, but you see a head moving up and down.

There is brief frontal nudity.

Suicide is talked about.

Characters drink alcohol and use drugs including cocaine and use syringes.

Violence is also heavy in the second half of the movie including blood and gore. It may not be a slasher film like Halloween Kills, but you do see characters with slashed necks and blood spurting.

Is Last Night in Soho Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

Last Night in Soho is a psychological horror film, so it doesn’t leave you warm and fuzzy for sure. Is Last Night in Soho too scary for kids? Not really if they’re into the horror genre. There are some jumps and scares, but I would be more concerned about the mature content like rape, sex, and self-harm.

Wright does a fantastic job with the 1960s London vibe, and the music and dance scenes are captivating. But the tone is constantly switched and Wright needs to decide what kind of movie he wants this to be. There are plenty of better options for Halloween movies for kids and teens if you’re looking for something to watch during Halloween.

Taylor-Joy and McKenzie really carry this movie, especially at the beginning, but as the gore was introduced, it became less interesting. Instead of being scary, it was more bleh.
