Is Netflix’s He’s All That Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Wondering if Netflix’s He’s All That is ok for kids? He’s All That is rated TV-14 for language and suggestive dialogue. This reimagined version of the original She’s All That from the 90s reverses the gender roles, but still sticks with the basic storyline. Here’s what parents need to know in this He’s All That Parents Guide.

He’s All That Parents Guide

He’s All That stars TikToker Addison Rae as Padgett Sawyer , a beauty and makeover influencer who attempts to salvage her social media reputation after she catches her boyfriend cheating and has a meltdown, all captured on a livestream. She makes a bet with frenemy, Alden (Madison Pettis), that she can turn anybody into the next prom king. Alden chooses Cameron (Tanner Buchanan), a grungy nobody at school who seems to have a chip on his shoulder. But like the original, it seems as though Padgett starts to fall for Cameron, but what happens when he finds out he was just a bet?

Why is He’s All That rated TV-14? Mostly for language and some sexual references.

Language

There is a decent amount of language including at least 8 uses of a** in some way including bada** and a**hole. There are also a few uses of sh*t, damn, g-ddamn, hell, di*k, and one use of fu*k. Other words and phrases like OMG, nads and “blow me” are used.

Mature Content

There is some sexual content including an anal sex joke, mention of sex, a girl remarking she could see a boy’s “thing” while a grandma remarks that it’s not bad. There are a couple of kisses.

A guy is caught cheating on his girlfriend, but there is no nudity.

Two characters get into a fight and start throwing punches.

There is talk of a death of a parent.

Kids are seen partying, but I was impressed that there did not seem to be alcoholic drinks and only mocktails were served.

Is He’s All That Appropriate for Kids Under 13?

He’s All That knows where it stands, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more. This is aimed towards the tween/teen crowd who love TikTok and Addison Rae and Cobra Kai‘s Tanner Buchanan. There are definitely jokes put into the film that are inappropriate for this age group and totally unnecessary. However, I was pleasantly surprised that considering the shows circulating around Netflix, this seems like a more accurate teenage portrayal, in the sense of teenage activities, parental supervision, and high school life. I’m looking at you Outer Banks

There was no overt nudity, sex, alcohol, or drugs.

He’s All That is cheesy, fluff, that is an acceptable guilty pleasure for teens. If you hate TikTok and Influencer culture, then this isn’t for you. Because yes, there’s a Kardashian cameo.

When you break down all the parts, sure you kind of get a hot mess. Subpar camera work, a Tik Tok star as a lead actress, and a rushed plot, does not make for a hit, but I didn’t hate it.  Sure, Addison Rae is not the best actress, but she’s pretty, fun, has great style, and is charming. Tanner Buchanan just wasn’t given much to work with, and while he and Rae have chemistry, there wasn’t enough time or substance to really start rooting for their relationship. But they’re both totes adorbs. (Does anybody say that anymore?)

She’s All That fans will get some fan service with Rachael Leigh Cook playing Padgett’s mom and Matthew Lillard as the Principal. And yes, you’ll get that “weird a** tradition” of a dance-off!

I already knew the ending, but I was still a bit invested. It’s like the moment in Can’t Buy Me Love where I knew the gig was up, and I wanted to look away, because I knew it was going to be sad, but I couldn’t. I just felt for all the teens living their lives on social media and the pressures they feel. And maybe this movie will help some of them.

Appreciate He’s All That for what it is and you’ll have a good time. Expect more, and you’ll be disappointed.
