Is The Haunting of Bly Manor Kid Friendly?

As Halloween approaches, kids and teens will want to watch more horror-inspired shows. Created by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) it doesn’t have the same intensity as Hill House, but there are still disturbing scenes for young kids and strong language.

The Haunting of Bly Manor tells the story of a governess hired by a man to move to Bly Manor in the country and care for his nephew, Miles and niece, Flora, and live alongside their housekeeper, Mrs. Grose. When she arrives at the Bly estate, she begins to see apparitions that proceed to haunt the premises.The governess discovers that her predecessor, Miss Jessel, had an affair with a valet named Peter Quint. Now both dead, are they who are haunting the house, the children, and the governess? 

Here’s what parents need to know about The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Language

The Haunting of Bly Manor is not ok for kids due to heavy language. There are f-words throughout many of the episodes as well as the use of sh– and g-ddammit.

Mature Content

Some of the scary content includes faceless ghosts and creepy dolls. There is also talk of suicide and death of children. 

There is no nudity in The Haunting of Bly Manor, but there is sexual content. You see the bare back of a character and there is some kissing and a lesbian love story with same-sex kissing scenes. 

There are also scenes with alcohol and smoking.

Is The Haunting of Bly Manor Appropriate for Kids Under 16?

This one won’t be too scary for teens, but some of the sexual scenes could be uncomfortable for kids to watch with their parents, but there are important discussions to have. I would recommend The Haunting of Bly Manor for kids ages 16 and older. Kids younger than that could watch if you and they are comfortable with the content.
