Should You Let Kids Watch The New Mutants? The New Mutants is Not Typical Marvel

The New Mutants Parents Guide

If you’re expecting a typical Marvel movie for The New Mutants, this isn’t it. The New Mutants is not part of the MCU Marvel Movies List and is kind of part of the X-Men franchise. In the The New Mutants, Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton) and Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga) are four young mutants being held in a hospital for psychiatric monitoring. Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga), believes the teenagers are a danger both to themselves and to society and keeps a close eye on them as she struggles to teach them how to rein in their mutant abilities.

When newcomer Danielle “Dani” Moonstar (Blu Hunt) joins the other patients in the facility, strange occurrences begin to take place. The hospital’s patients are plagued by hallucinations and flashbacks, and their new mutant abilities–and their friendships–will be tested as they battle to try to make it out alive.

My friend, Tessa from Mama’s Geeky’s had her daughter be my kid reporter, because yes, as a 7-year-old she watched The New Mutants and loved it! There’s no way my kids are watching, but Tessa is a big comic book fan and says The New Mutants is way better than what people are saying.

What Parents Should Know Before Their Kids Watch The New Mutants

Is The New Mutants ok for kids? It’s totally creepy. Here’s what parents should know before their kids watch The New Mutants.

1.There are a lot of 4-letter words in The New Mutants in typical PG-13 fashion. There is one 4-word, a lot of b words, and a bunch of other language, so parents beware. 

2. There is some gore and definite scary creatures that could give kids nightmares. In fact, the movie is about the mutants reliving their nightmares. A Demon Bear eats another character. The things with no eyes are horrifying, and once scene shows a very burnt body that could be disturbing for kids.

 

3. It’s Not as Much Action as You Think. You’d think for a film about comic books, there would be more action, but there’s not.  Tessa raves that the Dragon scene is way cool, though.

4. What, it’s a love story? So yes, there are some romantic scenes amongst the thriller. Parents should know there is kissing between Rahne and Dani and Roberto and Illyana (Magik). There are some sexual references (likely to go over children’s heads), implied nudity, two girls in a shower, and shirtless male characters.

5. This could be a good beginner horror flick for teens. The New Mutants is rated PG-13, and that’s a good age recommendation. It’s not as terrifying as the trailers make it seem, but I wouldn’t recommend it for kids in general unless your kids like that genre.

6. There’s some psychological stuff that could trigger some kids. One scene involves a Priest branding a girl on her skin. Once again, they are reliving their nightmares.

This film is most likely to be enjoyed by a niche crowd who already read The New Mutants comics. Maybe not as terrifying as some people say, but parents, I’d still be careful with The New Mutants. If you want your kids to begin with lighter Marvel movies, then here is a list of kid-friendly Marvel movies to start with.
