Is Prom Pact Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Wondering if Prom Pact is ok for kids? Prom Pact is a new coming-of-age movie on Disney Channel and Disney+, highlighting that time when trying to make adult life decisions, but also still being a teen. And yes, there’s a prom scene, but no, it’s not all totally about prom. Here’s what parents need to know in this Prom Pact review for parents.

Prom Pact Age Rating Review

Prom Pact Parents Guide

It’s the height of prom season, and high school senior Mandy Yang (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her best friend, Ben (Milo Manheim), can sometimes be seen as outsiders. They don’t party, they spend every weekend watching movies, and they don’t worry about popularity. And they’re surrounded by Everests.

Mandy’s lifelong dream is to attend Harvard, but to her horror, she was waitlisted. She’s determined to do whatever she can do to get herself accepted, even if that means trying to get close to the popular jock Neanderthal, Graham Lansing (Blake Draper), whose father is a senator and Harvard alumni. But once Mandy becomes Graham’s tutor, she begins to realize there’s more to him than she thought. But Ben is wondering what happened to his best friend.

Age Rating: Why is Prom Pact Rated TV-14?

Prom Pact is rated TV-14 for strong coarse language which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 14.

Language in Prom Pact

There is some language including dumba**, damn, hell, and words of Deity like “for g-d’s sake.”

Mature Content: Is Prom Pact OK for Kids?

Some content is a little mature for younger kids in the Disney+ version of Prom Pact. There is teen partying with drinking and teens making out in the background. There is also some kissing.

A nickname for a character is “no-nuts Plunkett.”

In one scene there is a conversation about whether a character has had sex. One character asks if his “pee has been in a v.” The character repeats it a second time referring to a different character.

Other mature topics include underage drinking, making college decisions, friendship, using others, and high school themes.

Is Prom Pact Appropriate For Kids Under 14?

Prom Pact is a fun film with an appreciation for 80s rom-coms. It also feels more of an accurate portrayal of high school, aside from the elaborate promposals. There are certainly some of those in my kids’ high schools, but not quite as fancy as these. But the 80s themes added to the fun! We’d recommend Prom Pact for kids ages 10 and older.

Of course there are still the high school movie stereotypes which Prom Pact leans into, but there are also the stereotypes they break. One of those being the friendship of a male and female. Huzzah for the leads not falling in love with each other. I know, spoiler alert, but it was never a storyline. The story to be seen is a healthy male/female friendship where you make mistakes, forgive, and continue to support. Applause!

Mandy is a feminist, but she throws her support to her causes without being super preachy…most of the time. It’s refreshing to see a protagonist who is sure of herself knows what she wants, and then can have a change of heart when circumstances change. No matter how much we try to lay out our plans and our futures, it’s important to be flexible and open-minded.

Prom Pact is reminiscent of the 80s rom-com with some modern touches. It’s the best of both worlds and fun from start to finish. Both Lee and Manheim are adorable and charming.

If you are concerned with some of the mature content in Prom Pact, then check out the version on Disney Channel. It has been edited for a younger viewing audience.
