Smile Age Rating

Why is Smile Rated R? Smile is rated R by the MPAA for strong violent content, grisly images, and language.

Language

There is a lot of profanity in Smile including uses of sh*t, damn, and too many f-words to count. There are also words of Deity used like g-ddammit and Jesus Christ.

Mature Content

A woman is shown in her bra and underwear.

A couple is seen in bed together.

A woman is seen taking a shower, and you can see her back.

Suicide is a main topic. Some characters drink alcohol.

Scary Content

Blood and gore is what really gives Smile its R rating, aside from the language. There is a lot of jump scares, intense screaming, oozing blood, nightmares, violence, and blood splatters. A character slices their own face. There are scary monsters. A character peels their face off. Many characters die by suicide. A dead cat is wrapped in a child’s birthday present.

Is Smile Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

With the graphic violence, Smile may be too intense for some tweens and teens. You can expect to see mild sexual content, blood and gore, intense violent scenes, alcohol use, death by suicide, and profanity used by some of the characters. To sum it up, Smile is not kid-friendly or recommended for kids under 17.

Parents know their children best, and if you have questions whether a film is appropriate for your child, I recommend screening it first. Smile does not mess around, and is in intense watch, even for adults.
