Is Work It on Netflix Kid Friendly? | Parents Guide

Work It is a new teen comedy on Netflix starring Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher. Is Work It kid friendly? Work It is rated TV-14 for some language and sexual innuendos. Here’s what parents need to know about this dance-inspired film.

Is Work It Kid Friendly?

When I first saw the trailer for Work It my first thought was Pitch Perfect but dancing. Aaaand, I wasn’t wrong. The scenery is high school versus college, though the main actors supposed to be in high school are in their 20s. Some of the jokes in Work It are geared for older teens, so I don’t recommend it for tween age unless you want to have some conversations afterwards.

Quinn Ackerman (Sabrina Carpenter) desperately wants to attend Duke, and she’s done all the right things to secure her admission until she hasn’t.  So she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school, but the problem is she doesn’t know how to dance and her college admission depends on her winning a competition.

Language

There is some language including about 7 uses of sh–, 5 uses of damn, 2 uses of a–, and a use of g-ddamn in a song lyric.

Mature Content

There is some kissing, nothing too passionate. However as far as sexual content, there is one scene where a dancer has a boner, and they make the penis size especially large to make a point. In fact, it’s a reason for disqualification. Also one character is shirtless while another ogles him from afar. There is also spooning in a mattress store, and no, not with a utensil.

If you’re a dancer or a fan of dancing, then Work It is a lot of fun! Just like in Pitch Perfect, the competition scenes were some of my favorites to watch. Teens are usually easy to please, and if they want a something to keep them entertained when movies still aren’t in theaters, then this is it.

Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher make great leads and Liza Koshy is hilarious! I’d recommend Work It for kids over 14 and then even a little older if you’re concerned with some of the content. Netflix got the TV-14 rating correct this time unlike The Umbrella Academy 2.

Also, this may be good for teens who are stressed out about college and the expectations parents put on kids. There’s more to life. Perhaps lacking some originality, Work It does offer a fun Friday night watch with friends.
