Is Captain America: Brave New World Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

Captain America: Brave New World continues the legacy of Captain America with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking over the shield. Although the stakes to the world may not be as grave as previous Marvel films, perhaps the stakes are greater for Captain America to pave the way for the future of the MCU and the Avengers.

Captain America: Brave New World Parents Guide

Anthony Mackie returns as hero Sam Wilson, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America while still keeping some wings, true to Falcon. After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident after someone tries to assassinate the President. The accused? One of Sam’s friends, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly). He’ll do anything to release him from jail.

So Sam must work fast to discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before a war breaks out between the US and Japan over adamantium, and before the entire world starts seeing red – a Red Hulk that is.

Parents need to know that Captain America: Brave New World has a lot of violence and language which may be too harsh for young kids.

Why is Captain America Brave New World Rated PG-13?

The age rating for Captain America: Brave New World is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and strong language which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 13.

Language

There is a lot of language and profanity in this new Captain America movie including at least 13 uses of sh*t, 5 uses of damn, 2 uses of bullsh*t, 5 uses of a**, 2 uses of son of a bit*h, and 13 uses of hell. There are also a couple of uses of bastard as well as uses of Deity including g-ddamn. In one clip it appears a character yells f*cking, but it’s in the background.

Action/Violence

It’s typical Marvel action for Captain America: Brave New World. You can expect to see a lot of action sequences involving weapons such as knives, guns, missiles, and threats of war. There are explosions and a lot of punching and up close combat. Red Hulk goes on a rampage and starts destroying a city. There isn’t a lot of blood but there are deaths, including a suicide where a character shoots himself which could be triggering for some.

Sexual Content

There is no sexual content or nudity in Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America Brave New World Kid Friendly

Is Captain America: Brave New World Kid Friendly?

Because of the high levels of violence, language, and a somewhat boring plot, Captain America: Brave New World is not kid friendly for kids under 10 years old. However, if your child has seen all the other Marvel movies, is this one so much worse than the others as far as action and language are concerned? No. But with a run time of about 2 hours and a weak villain, there’s not a lot to keep kids entertained.

We get nibbles of greatness throughout the film, but no big payoff. There’s a lot of pressure on Captain America: Brave New World to set the course for Marvel again. While there are exciting moments like throwing in Red Hulk (!!!) for a hot minute, sprinkling the word ‘Avengers’ in the film, or adding in cameos, fans may still be left disappointed at where this franchise is heading.

If you’ve been with the MCU from the beginning, you’ll get some payoff with returning characters and continuation of past storylines, so there’s that. But how much longer can we say this movie is just setting up for xyz…then Marvel will be back again.

Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez make a fun new Cap and Falcon duo with great chemistry. There’s a line where Ross tells Sam, “You’re not Steve Rogers.” Ouch. He’s right, though. He’s not. He’s Sam Wilson and people expecting him to be Steve Rogers or expecting Mackie to be Chris Evans is just silly.

The storyline with Sam and Isaiah was probably the best of the film. Lumbly is a master at expressing the emotional weight of Bradley going back to prison again for crimes that were not his fault. This needed to be explored more as well as bringing him back in action sequences, especially the last scene.

Political thriller? I wouldn’t go that far, but with themes of brainwashing and possible war, whew, perhaps this hits way too close to home right now. It’s doubtful Captain America: Brave New World will be anyone’s favorite Captain America film, but it does enough to still keep audiences invested in the MCU, even if it involves some gimmicks. This is one of the better films in Phase 5.
