Have you been watching ABC’s The Catch now on #TGIT? We need to talk. I need a Facebook discussion group, because that show has me biting my nails every week wondering what’s going to happen next. The Catch is my new favorite show. When I say new, I mean new to me, because it’s now on its second season. I’ll tell you why I love it and why you should watch it, too! We were able to interview Producer Allan Heinberg and Actress Sonya Walger (Margot) after screening an episode and get you some more scoop.
If you don’t know what The Catch is about, I’ll fill you in. Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos) is LA’s top private investigator — and the one woman you don’t want to mess with. But when her fiancé (Peter Krause) cons her out of millions and disappears, Alice goes on a private mission for payback. No matter where it leads or the secrets she must keep along the way, Alice will stop at nothing to catch her man.
I first started watching The Catch in the first season because of Peter Krause. I missed him as Adam Braverman in Parenthood. Then when I started watching, I admit I got mad. I got mad, because I thought it was just going to be a cat and mouse game. I didn’t give it enough time, and I was wrong. Forgive me!
When I found out we would be screening an episode and interviewing Sonya Walger, I figure I needed to do some research. So I watched more, and more, and more. Then I was binge watching the entire first season after the kids went to bed, hiding under the covers until 3 a.m. People, I sacrificed sleep for this show! And it’s because of the cast. They have great chemistry, and you get invested in the characters.
Not only are they funny and entertaining, but they’re so nice! I was telling Sonya about my sleep sacrifice, and she was like “Woah, that’s the greatest compliment.” Then she was so sweet and asked to see pictures of my kids. Sonya is perfection in the show, too. So nasty, yet you have to root for her, too! For the last two episodes, Jay Hayden (Danny) tweeted at me during the show while I was doing some live tweets. It’s so fun to have a cast that engages with their fans. I admit it; I’m a true fangirl.
Catch my two favorites – Sonya and Jay- in this clip!
Say his name, Margot!!!
I am all about the fashion in The Catch. The power outfits these women are coming through with…I’m taking notes. Every dang week I’m trying to find a copycat version. It’s eye candy galore for fashionistas.
Sonya: “I tell you, it’s my favorite thing is going in for a wardrobe fitting, and that is not usually the case… When you go in with Peggy [stylist], and there’s just a rack of the most exquisite dresses. She’s wonderful, and has just the best eye, and I think this is the fun of doing season two of the show is she knows my body better than I do, so the dresses are not ones that I would pick. I’m the mother of two- I’m lucky to get dressed in the morning, so just to be zipped into a thing with heels, and the hair, and it’s glorious. It’s glorious. And it just means by the time I’ve been through the works, Margot’s there. It’s such an enormous part of being a character is having the right look and jewelry and hair and makeup and things- it’s, it really, really is.”
The dresses are swoon-worthy, and I love how Sonya is keeping it real as a mom.
There are attractive people on The Catch. A lot of attractive people. I have great respect for shows with witty dialogue. When some shows have a ton of good-looking people, they tend to rely on sexual scenes to attract an audience. There are steamy scenes in this show, so I won’t be watching with my kids, but the dialogue is fast-moving and on-point. I remember snort laughing this season when there was a character named Thor, and he disappeared. Ben referenced that he had family issues on Asgard. HA! If you don’t pay attention you’ll miss gems like that. Get it? Thor? Asgard. Any fellow Marvel geeks out there?!
Allan: “We have the most amazing cast, so it’s so fun to write that for them.”
What Does The Catch Mean?
As a fan of the show, I wanted to know why it was called The Catch. In the first season I thought it was referencing Alice trying to catch Ben. However then I noticed that Ben asks, “What’s the catch?” in a future episode.
Alan: “Well, for me, before I came onboard a version of the show already existed and it was, I think, a reference to Alice catching Ben. That was her drive. But for me it was about love… you can’t have it all, there’s always gonna be a catch. The guy you fall in love with who turns out to be your soulmate- it’s also the guy who stole all of your money and is a career criminal. So in love, it’s never the whole fantasy. There’s always something pulling you back down to Earth. I think a lot of us look at love as an escape from our daily lives. And the catch is what real love is, it’s less romantic and a lot harder to achieve.”
“The Catch is what real love is, it’s less romantic and a lot harder to achieve.”
Amen! Sometimes in television shows, love is seen as picture perfect and easy. Please, we all have issues. Real love is work. I love that the storylines on The Catch do make love complicated.
There are a lot of kick-butt women on this show, and I love it!! So many female leads. How do they feel about it? Are the men outnumbered?
Allan: “I think when we brought Rhys on full time, Pete Krause was like, alright, we’re okay now. I’ve got a partner; he feels a little bit better, and now they’re sort of a comedy trio with Gina joining them this year, so I think this year that’s sort of went away, but in the beginning, I think for Jay and for Pete, there may have been a lot of ladies.”
Sonya: “Totally fine with that.”
Allan: “…we do have a lot of really strong women.”
Ha! They all love it. I asked Jay about it in a Facebook Live, and he was definitely very happy with all the strong women surrounding him. Get it, girls! I love watching every single one of them. When you’re kicking A and taking names in heels…I die. I look forward to The Catch every week!
If you’re needing some romance, laughs, wit, mystery, and drama in your life, then make sure to watch The Catch on ABC on Thursday nights at 10|9c during #TGIT with the other Shondaland shows!
Then let’s make a Facebook group where we can chat all about it every Thursday night, so I can decompress. Kthxbai.
Thank you Disney and ABC for inviting me to screen The Catch and providing travel and accommodations. All opinions of my fangirling obsessions with The Catch are my own.
