Schooool’s out for winter…break! So what are you going to do with them for the next 2 to 3 weeks? I look forward to this time to slow down, sleep in, stay up late, and enjoy my kids. Then after the 3rd day when it has lost its novelty, I break out our list of things to do over winter break with kids! Here are some of our favorites.
Things to Do Over Winter Break with Kids
We’ve already crossed off some of the things on our list this winter break, but the kids are excited to do more! I’ve found that it sets expectations while giving them something to look forward to doing with the family.
Go See Holiday Lights
We love us some holiday lights! Look up where in your town you can see light shows or the neighborhoods that go Griswold with their decorations. Then we usually end with some donuts and hot chocolate as a treat.
Take a 24-Hour Vacation
If you’re not traveling somewhere far for the holidays, then plan a 24-hour vacation. Make it a staycation at a local hotel or travel a couple of hours to a theme park with a holiday event and make it an overnight trip. We recently did this, and the girls had a blast! It didn’t break our budget, and we didn’t have to take a lot of time off from work.
Take Pictures Around Town
Go exploring in your own town! There’s a place nearby where everyone goes to take awesome holiday photos. I had no idea until recently when I asked a friend. Discover new areas and have a fun photo shoot.
I took the younger girls to go shopping. They needed stylish outfits that pop and that would be comfortable enough to go and play afterwards. Unicorns, sparkles, leggings, and ruffles for the win! Even though I have all girls, I don’t like to have them go matchy-matchy, but I do like to coordinate colors and patterns.
Make Slime
Are your children on the slime craze, too? They ask for glue, shaving cream, and glitter on a daily basis. Admittedly, it’s not my favorite, but that’s why I save it for winter break when I’m nice mommy. That’s also why I need outfits that are machine washable! Thanks, OshKosh B’gosh!
Dollar Store Christmas Shopping
For sibling gifts in our home, we have a tradition of taking them for Dollar Store Christmas Shopping. They get to choose affordable gifts for their siblings while going in stealth mode. They love it!
Visit a Butterfly Atrium or Gardens
When traveling we found a Butterfly Atrium where butterflies fly all around you. I can dig it when educational meets fun. My girls grabbed their butterfly guides and tried to name the different types of butterflies they saw.
Throw a New Years Party
One of my friends has a different themed New Years Party with her family. I’m always in awe, but that’s not how I roll. However, it did inspire me to grab some hats, decorations, and confetti, and throw New Years Parties of our own. Dress up, dress down, do you. Just have some fun, delicious snacks, and wish a Happy New Year to friends and loved ones. Have a plan and winter break with kids can be a fun fest of memories. Or let them hang with grandma.
Now that you know what you’re doing over winter break with kids, dress for the occasion! We love OshKosh B’Gosh for styles for every personality in our family. Some are fancy, some are more casual. I love how they add ruffles to the bottom of a sweatshirt and a bow in back to give it a little extra oomph while still being comfortable.

Pur favorite is heading to the inflatable place. We tend to only go during winter break as it is quite expensive for what it is..
