Is Star Wars: The Last Jedi Kid Friendly? What Ages Should Watch?

I’ve learned that the majority of Star Wars fans don’t want any spoilers. Nothing. No emotion, no details, no anything. Just leave them in peace. So if you’ve watched trailers, you’ll be fine here. If you don’t even like that, then leave now. However this semi-review is for the parents. Is Star Wars: The Last Jedi kid friendly? What ages would be safe watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

Is Star Wars: The Last Jedi Kid Friendly?

It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan! Like I said before, I won’t talk too much. I don’t want to give anything away that hasn’t been out there, but I’ll tell you what, I’m bringing all my girls ages 13 to 5 to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Profanity: I counted one swear word. ETA: I watched The Last Jedi again and caught 3 more. There’s an a**, hell, damn, and bastard.

Sexual Content: No nudity and no sexual content. There is a kiss, some glances, and a bare male chest exposed.

Violence: Now here is where your mileage may vary depending on your child. I took my youngest to see Rogue One when she was 4. She was fine and had no issues other than burying her face during a few scenes. She may have even dozed off at some point. However, then she watched Rogue One with my husband the other day and did not like it. There are fight scenes, deaths, explosions, and bad guys in typical Star Wars fashion, but I would say Star Wars: The Last Jedi is more kid friendly than Rogue One.

Why I’m Taking My Kids to Watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi

With as little detail as possible, here’s why I’m taking my girls to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters and why it’s okay for my kids.

They are Star Wars fans. They enjoy the movies, so I know they’ll want to see this one. With favorites like Princess Leia, Rey, Luke Skywalker, Captain Phasma, and BB-8 returning, they’re thrilled!

More Female Roles. I can’t tell you how this makes me happy. And with the addition of Rose Tico, more diversity in roles, too. As the mother of 5 girls, I’m supporting the franchise.

It’s entertaining. Whether you’re a new Star Wars fan, whether you’re a die hard, whether you’re just here for the popcorn and treats, you will be entertained. I loved it! I can’t guarantee whether you’ll love it, too, because there are so many layers to a Star Wars fan, but I will guess your kids will enjoy themselves, especially if they enjoyed the other Star Wars movies.

Porgs. I admit, I was not on the Porg bandwagon. They are not as annoying as I thought they would be, and your kids will probably love them. I know my kids will think they are adorable and funny. They are certainly not Jar Jar Binks. He still gives me nightmares.

Side note: I read a poll where people liked Jar Jar more than Jyn Erso! Who are you people? If that’s you, then our opinions in movies are not simpatico.

Teaching Lessons. I always have a good talk with my kids about the Light Side versus the Dark Side after a Star Wars movie. I will do it again for this movie!

Humor. They threw in some laughs for the audience, which children and parents will appreciate.

What Ages Do I Recommend and Is The Last Jedi Okay for Kids?

I would recommend Star Wars: The Last Jedi for children ages 8 and older. If your child is more sensitive to violence and death, than I would recommend older. You know your child best. There are some darker themes, tense moments, dark side evil, but, there are also heroes. If your children have seen the other Star Wars movies, then new creatures, characters, and lands await! I’d classify Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a PG-13 family friendly movie.

I wish I could give you my opinion on all the things, but I won’t. I may need to start a Facebook support group for discussions after everyone sees it, though.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters December 15th! Go and watch it quickly, like lightspeed fast! It’s definitely in my top 3 Star Wars movies.

Other reviews are saying they counted 5 profanity, one of them surprisingly “bit..”. If true, Hollywood failed. Not only is it sexist, but it’s a nasty word when used like that and not fit for my kids. In fact, no one in my family stoops down to use profanity. Some Hollywood actors talk like that so much and are so used to it, those who have final edit aren’t bothered by it. I’ve seen scripts in which actors actually add in profanity even though the writers didn’t have it there. Profanity is not needed if the person speaking has enough command of language in order to express themselves. Some reviewers get so caught up in a film, its easy for them to miss profanity, or they don’t consider certain words profane (taking God’s name in vain), or they’re so used to hearing it in their lives, work, home and so forth.

Hmm, it’s certainly true that I could have missed something. I was caught up in the film. I’m usually pretty sensitive to profanity, because I don’t use it in my home. That’s why I enjoy the Star Wars movies, because they don’t usually insert unnecessary profanity as a whole. And although I don’t say God’s name in vain, you’re right I did not count that as profanity in my review. I’ll be watching The Last Jedi again and will update my post as I keep an ear out. This is not a personal criticism of this blogger, but just a word of caution. I’ve worked for many years as a censor which had to review films and when I first started I’d come from a place that was full of people who spoke so much profanity that I found my self missing items I should have marked down because I had gotten so used to being around that language that I blocked it out. It took me a while to condition my mind to catch words in order to do my job. I’ve been in the entertainment industry for over 32 years and now work as a producer.
