Alice Through the Looking Glass is crazy and weird in the best sense of the words. I’ve got to say I love the Red Queen! I’ve always had a thing for villains, and Helena Bonham Carter is the bomb. Now that I’ve professed my love, it’s time for the show!
First: The Synopsis
Alice Kingsleigh has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit, Absolem, the Cheshire Cat, and the Mad Hatter, who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out.
Is it for kids? Will kids like it?
Honestly, it depends on your child. I discuss whether it’s appropriate for children in my video review. I think a good first indicator is if they liked Alice in Wonderland. If they did and are familiar with the story, then I think they’ll love it! There will be characters they recognize, and I loved the visual effects, costuming, and enchantment.
With the time travel, I felt the story was more complex and may be hard for small children to grasp. However, with the time travel you also get a glimpse of characters as children, and let me tell you, tiny Tweedles are adorable! The movie is almost 2 hours long though, so if your little kids are like my little kids, then even all the popcorn, candy, and soda may not hold them for that long.
When you hear Alan Rickman’s voice on the screen, it’s magic. I would watch this film again and again solely based on that. There are definitely more reasons to watch, especially a good female heroine. I love that Alice does not give one lick about society’s expectations for her.
Alice Through the Looking Glass is a magical adventure that teaches us the meaning of friendship and family.
