First of all, Happy Mother’s Day to all my mamas out there! Today at church someone said that Mother’s Day should be referred to as Motherly Day since there are so many women who play important roles in our lives. I’ve been thinking about that since and about the definition of mother. What roles does a mother play in our lives?
Sure, by definition, I am a mother. I birthed 5 children. However there are so many other women who have mothered me who did not give birth to me.
I’m thankful for…
the women who have been my teachers in school and church.
the women who teach my children.
the women who fight for what’s right.
those who are kind.
the women who show love.
my friends’ moms for raising good people.
the women who give my kids rides when I’m not available.
the women who coach my children’s sports teams.
the teachers who sacrifice time with their own children for mine.
the women who don’t judge me or my parenting.
the women who have cooked a meal for me when I wasn’t one of theirs.
the women who I call friends.
the women who strengthen other women.
the women who are desperately trying to make this world a better place.
the women who have made me laugh when I really needed a good laugh.
a community of strong women who show my daughters how to live a life of joy.
I’m grateful for my mother, who really is the best mom and nana anyone could ask for. My heart aches for those suffering on this day, for those who have lost their own mothers, which includes my husband. I also wish I could comfort those who have lost a child, a pain I cannot comprehend. I think of those who want to be mothers so badly and can’t. It is a bittersweet day for many, and I hope you know you’re not alone.
Thank you to women everywhere who are trying their best. Happy Motherly Day.
