Mid-August is when I really start asking, “Umm, shouldn’t the kids be back in school already?” Funny how that works, since in May, I’m desperate for school to end. As excited as I am for the first day of school to arrive, I need to prepare. With 5 children and 3 different schools, the first day of school is all about survival mode. Thank you to Acorn and Costco for sponsoring this post to help us get ready for that first day.
Start putting your kids to bed earlier as the weeks approach going back to school, they say. Ha! You try telling your kids to go to bed when the sun’s still out and the neighbor kids are laughing and running. I’m not fooling anybody. So come the first day, everyone is TIRED. And that includes this mama. So everything needs to be done and ready the night before. Lunches made, school supplies in backpacks, outfits laid out on the bed.
I’m not trying to be that mom sobbing at the bus stop as I run after it in my pajamas, because we missed that dang bus. We just moved and are starting new schools this year. I found out we have a bus. We have a bus! You know what that means? No school pickup line!! <insert insane dancing here>
Golden Box Tops Challenge
To get all our breakfast, lunch, and cleaning supplies, I took my crew to our mecca, Costco. It’s what large family dreams are made of. I was happy to see Box Tops on a lot of products we already use. We’ve collected Box Tops For Education since my children started school. I love them, because it’s my way of helping out our schools. As my friend, April, likes to put it, “I’ll make it rain Box Tops and contribute to teacher luncheons.” Hey, that’s our way. That’s real money for the schools to purchase what they need for our kids. Some moms like to be room mom, others don’t. Here it’s raining Box Tops. Literally.
We like to make Box Tops a little competition in our home. Whoever does an extra chore gets to cut out the Box Top and put it in their container. Then they get bragging rights at school, and they help out their classroom. Winning all around here.
Right now you can participate in the Golden Box Tops Challenge by purchasing specially marked General Mills products with 8 Box Tops at Costco – all while entering to win an additional 100 eBoxTops with the Costco Golden Box Tops Challenge! That’s a LOT of Box Tops! And in my house that means a lot of extra chores. That makes mama happy.
Click here to learn how to enter, check out the prizes, and see if you have the Golden Box Top. Then you can go around singing, “I’ve got the Golden Box Top!”
First Day of School Breakfast
To get prepared for school, we also plan our breakfast menu the night before. I’d like to say we have shaped pancakes, eggs, and bacon for breakfast for the first day of school, but no, no, and no. Cheerios and a Go-Gurt, friends! Did I mention we have a bus to catch? But hey I added a chalkboard sign, because Pinterest Mom rocking out over here.
Pack Lunches Ahead of Time
Get those lunches packed the night before, too. All the non-cold stuff gets packed in the lunch bag. You can freeze individual sandwiches (like almond butter and jelly) and grapes in a Ziploc bag, so the kids can grab them out of the freezer in the morning. I even give the kids organic juice drinks and organic fruit snacks, because doesn’t the word organic equal ‘good mom?’ That’s what I heard anyway.
Hugs to all those mamas who have the first day of school blues. And to all the survival moms out there, I three-finger Hunger Games salute you. This mama is just happy to make it through and will be celebrating with a big ‘ol bag of chocolate. Costco-sized.
